My DD is about to finish her first year of school. She has been pretty amazing during the past year, and I sort of want to celebrate the end of the school year by getting her a gift. I am concerned about spoiling her, so I am not sure if this is the right thing to do. I am prepared to make this a yearly thing, like a celebratory thing that happens at the end of each school year. What do you think? Good idea/bad idea?

@Mrs. Cereal: I think it's a fun idea--my mom did this while we were growing up, but instead of a gift we had a special outing/event. She was a teacher, so I think she was celebrating too! What about going to see a movie & getting frozen yogurt or something like that?

If you want a small tangible gift, What about a book that you feel sums up her year - related to an accomplishment, special interest, or just a book she's really liked that year. You could buy personalized bookplates and write the year/a message in each one.

I took my daughter on a special outing last year. Maybe that would seem less like "spoiling"?

I love this idea! Maybe you could do a bit of a combination - an outing plus a trip to the bookstore to pick out a special book?

i wouldn't have a problem with a gift but if it's going to be a yearly expectation I like the book and outing ideas a lot. I love traditions around doing things together.
I am getting my daughter a new backpack and lunchbox for pre k graduation. She needs them anyway but I figure it's a fun way to celebrate. -
Thanks everyone! Just to clarify, I am not really worried about spoiling her. Honestly, I love getting her gifts and surprising her, so this is probably more about me than about her. I think an outing and a book is the way I will go for this year and continue it every year.
