Do you always take a gift to an engagement party? And if you do what are somethings you typically give?
In the past I have always given a gift card to an expensive restaurant but I am trying to save a lot more money these days and be a bit more frugal so don't really want to drop $100.

@plantains: I havent been to a lot of engagement parties, but whenever I am trying to save on a gift I will go to places like TJ maxx, marshalls or burlington and get something really nice but on sale

@plantains: haha oh damn! i think I just got a $15 bottle and then two glasses from Pier 1. It was a joint gift from me and a friend too!! Haha. That's what happens when you get engaged at 22 though all your friends are broke

Are you going to be invited to the bridal shower and wedding? In the past, I've skipped the gift at the engagement party & just done a shower gift as well as a wedding gift. I don't think engagement parties are so much for gifts as they are just for the celebration or announcement.
Honestly, if you want to gift, I'd take a bouquet of roses or a vase of Calla Lilies and cap the price at $30-$35.

This is one of the reasons I end up skipping engagement parties. I feel like half the couples will expect nothing, and the other half will expect something. We didn't have an engagement party so I'm lost.

We treat engagement parties like housewarming ... A little gift (like a succulent in a nice vase/cup), and a bottle of nice wine from our area.

I got a few small floral arrangements and honestly my favorite gift was a wedding planning organizer/notebook and some wedding magazines. Was a fun way to start planning and making it feel 'real'? But...if she wants expensive champs she may not be as impressed as the girl who wouldn't turn her nose up to Andre

@plantains: You're the kind of friend that I'd like to have!! As for gift giving, since you are trying to save some money, don't be too concerned about your friend's expensive taste. I totally feel you on the $100 restaurant cards and fancy bottles of champagne, but lesser expensive gifts can be just as nice. Why not order one of those fancy personalized wedding dress hangers from Etsy? Or something small but nice, like a small something from Michael Aram or Tiffanys. You can get nice things for under $50. And if the gift is more geared towards the bride-to-be, I wouldn't worry about that. Guy's don't generally expect gifts at these kinds of things, anyhow.

I usually bring a bottle of wine and card. I recently went to one a few weekends ago, and got them bulldog salt and pepper shakers from Pottery Barn (they have a bulldog). I didn't mind spending a little extra because I'm Maid of Honor in their wedding.
I'm going to another in a few weeks and got an engagement ring and intial Christmas ornament on clearance at Khol's.
