My son had this. We went to the ENT after a year of non stop ear infections. The ENT put him on a month long course of antibiotics... apparently the shorter courses he got for the ear infections weren't clearing up the problem all the way. The follow up appointment slowed they shrank enough that he didn't need surgery. We also made sure he got lots of fresh air that summer... maybe that helped too! I think he hasn't grown out of the problem completely yet, but he's not having ear infections every month, which is a huge improvement!

@Apex: is your son in day care? My son was fine till he went to day care, and as soon as he started it's like he was sick more often than not. Teething didn't help matters either.

We didn't change his diet. He wasn't sick when he started the course, so no obvious difference (but the doctor could see a difference when he looked in his nose). We saw a huge difference a few months later, when cold season started and he didn't come down with a gazillion ear infections.

@Apex: I had this as a kid. I wish my parents had it taken care of when I was younger (they didn't know about the issue when I was young). I finally had the surgery when I was 12 when my orthodontist told them my adenoids were a problem. But until then I snored like an old man and the mouth breathing gave me an overbite that required extensive orthodontic work. Even as an adult I mouth breathe at night as a leftover habit.

The surgery itself wasn't bad from what I recall. I don't have much experience with trying to fix it naturally, unfortunately.

I had enlarged adenoids that caused me to have sleep apnea. I had the surgery when I was 11 or 12. I spent one night in the hospital and then felt crummy for a day or two after that. Once they were out my sleep really improved.

I took my almost 3 year old to an ENT a few weeks ago after a prolonged ear infection and nonstop sniffles and they didn't recommend surgery but said that her adenoids are enlarged. They did mention that they can grow back, and to give her more time to grow, but that the surgery itself is pretty simple for kids and they're usually back to normal within a few days. I had mine out when I was about her age after similar issues and not sure it helped all that much, honestly.
