Thought it would be fun to have a thread for the kids starting kindergarten this coming fall. I just learned our school's kindergarten registration night is this month! Eek!

4. The school bus will pick up and drop off at his daycare center. I think they have an after school program too but not sure of the hours and he has 2 younger brothers at daycare so it makes for only one pick up at the end of the day.

Ah this is so exciting!
1) Child's name: Cobi
2) Birth month: February
3) Type of school: public, private, charter, whatever: actually, undecided. We applied to two charter schools, but we're also moving next month and will be assigned to an elementary school I like and have heard great things about.. and then the last option is a third charter school that's actually 45 minutes away, but DH just got offered a job there, and it seems like a great school and if he commuted with DH, we'd never have the added expense of before/after care.
4) What method of transportation?
That all depends! The local charter school and public school are bussing, if he went with DH he'd ride with him. The fourth charter school we'd need to drop him off. That one we'll probably eliminate for that reason alone. We'll already have a daycare drop off for DS2.

3) ugh, we are still deciding! we submitted for our local neighborhood school and should hear the enrollment numbers (typically high...like 25-30/class) in Mar or April. we are also in at a local parochial school that has a great reputation for both academics and just overall community, which i really like. and then we are also considering leaving her at her Montessori for K. we'll have to make a decision eventually! 
luckily they are all good options.
4) we'd be walkers to the public school, not sure if bus or drop-off to the parochial school, and would drop-off to the Montessori (but would be single drop-off with DD2...).

We (nervously) decided to send DS to kindergarten. His birthday is on the cutoff date and there was a great deal of back and forth on the issue! Hoping for the best though!

4. I'll drop off 4 days a week because DD2 is attending the threes program at the school and isn't eligible for bussing. On Fridays when DD2 stays home, I may have her take the bus.
Registration started in December; I just went in to present her medical paperwork/proof of residency the s week. Also just found out DD2 got into the same school's preK3 program; super excited to have them in the same place.

Our school is aboiut half a mile away so we will either walk or drive. I looked into the two charter schools in our area but they don't offer after school care so we are just going with the public school. I started registration but still need to provide some documents. Having a hard time finishing up with a newborn in the house!

@JennyD: he will be 4 years and 11 months haha. Since it's a year round school they start in July, but the cutoff is Aug 31.

We got the letter yesterday that my son got a spot at the local charter school! Now we need to decide public elementary or public charter. I've heard nothing but good things about both schools and we only have a few weeks to decide!
We'll be going to kindergarten info night at the public school this Tuesday, and info night at the charter school on 2/21.

I feel like I've been considering Kindergarten options since he was 3! We finally made a choice, which was the path of least resistance, much like most of our other parenting decisions.
1) son, F
2) Sept birthday. He makes the cutoff by 2 days.
3) We decided to do the private K class offered at his Montessori center. He's sensitive and will know nearly every kid, plus he already knows the teacher. We'll figure out if he'll do public K in 2018 or go straight to 1st later.
4) car, because our routine won't change from what it is now.
I can't wait to hear about everyone's Kinder registration process. Our decision for public school in '18 is messy, so I look forward to hearing what works for you all.

Our biggest issue is figuring out supplementary care since public K is only half day and we both work FT. We also are probably moving our now 10mo son to a different daycare since our current is in the complete opposite direction as K. Feels like such a complicated puzzle!

Wow! There are a lot of us! I'm very eager for registration night as I have so many questions about all of the logistics like hot lunch and bussing. I'm still unsure of putting a kindergartener on a school bus since I walked to elementary school myself.

We registered a couple weeks ago since school starts in early August here. We registered for our neighborhood public school, but he is autistic and has an IEP, so I'm hoping that our neighborhood school can cover his needs. Otherwise they will bus him to another school that can (doesn't worry me, he is bussed to his special needs pre-school and he absolutely loves it) I would love to just walk down the street though! In our school district school goes is M-F from 7:45-2ish, we don't really have a half day option, which makes me nervous when fitting in all of his therapies outside of school.

@Finfan: I also have a 1st grader (2nd grade in the fall) and she's been taking the bus since K, as have her classmates. They all seem to enjoy riding the bus a lot!

@Finfan: @Andrea: @lemondrop: I'm glad to hear your kiddos like the bus. DH thinks H is way too little to take a bus, but I'd be okay with it on the day I don't also have to drop off her sister. The bus is only for K and 1st grade, has seatbelts (and I assume a bus monitor), and drops off in our cul-de-sac.

Hi all! I'm a new Kindergarten mom this year (2016-2017).
A few things that helped this time last year. Check and see if your school has a parents ListServ. You can usually go ahead and sign up for it. It was great to learn about the school a year in advance.
Also, check out the PTO and see if they have an orientation night. Our public school basically said registration is just registration but the PTO hosted a new family night and went over all the logistics of the school. See if they have any new parent resources!

We registered two weeks ago, so it's official! I can't believe it. Our (neighborhood) school holds a few events at the end of the school year for new students; a concert, a meet the teachers night and a parents' night.
Joel is really excited for school. His preschool closed because most of the kids went to kindergarten and he was one of the three left behind. He was bummed I didn't bring back homework from registration.

Kindergarten registration is in April, but I already registered her for after care since my husband and I both work full time. It's super competitive here but we got a spot!
I'm a little nervous about her being the youngest, but she meets all the milestones so I think she will thrive.

Accidentally posted this in the 2016 K board yesterday, lol
1. DS - July Baby, so on the younger side for K this year
2. Public - but have applied for a magnet program
3. Depends on where he ends up. Daycare does wrap around care with pickup/drop off and we might do that at least for K since DD is there is would mean 1 drop off and pick up.
So today was the day to get the results of the lottery for magnet programs in our county. We did not get in to any of the 5 programs requested, but we are #60 on the waiting list for my first choice (fundamental school) and #31 on the waiting list for another good program (IB Program).
I am a little disappointed, but have heard from other parents/teachers that a waitlist number of 50 or lower is a decently safe bet that you will get in. So now I wait for the acceptance period to end and the waitlist numbers to update on 2/20. Fingers crossed!

Our charter school of choice is lottery too and I feel so lucky he got in.
We went to kindergarten info night at local public school option, because we've been weighing the two schools.. and leaning toward the charter because of transportation issues. My son's daycare is less than a mile away, but zoned for a different elementary in our district, so he couldn't get picked up/dropped off at daycare! That is pretty much a deal breaker for me.
Info night for the charter is feb 21 so we'll have more info then!
I hope he gets into one of them!!

3) We feed into an unacceptable public school because we live in a city with discontinuous school district lines (makes no sense). We applied to 3 charters, and were waitlisted (#521 in line, no hope) for choice #2, got into choice #3, and still waiting to hear from choice #1.
4) What method of transportation? Options #3 and #1 both send busses to our neighborhood, but if we're running late, DH can drive him to #1 since its adjacent to his work.
In our city, it all comes down to the last minute with getting moved up a wait list as accepted students decline admission, and then you can decline your #2 invitation for your #1, so someone from your #2 gets moved up their wait list. Nobody knows where they're actually going until August. Its so stressful.
