This virus doesn't have a vaccine and is apparently pretty brutal sending kids to ICU.
Has this hit your state or do you know of anyone with it? Scary!

My mom just sent me a link about it and i was like, "what's the big deal, I don't get it". It's just a regular virus, right?? Starts with a cold, cough, fever, etc?

Viruses generally don't have vaccines, that is part of what can make them so scary! I saw something earlier about this one in particular, definitely concerning.

It's a form of rhinovirus. From what I saw, it's more of a concern for children with asthma?? Anything related to breathing is very scary ... With the cold and flu season approaching, it's a reminder to practice good hygiene and remind kids to cover their mouths, etc.

Its hit our state. From what I understand, it's more serious for kids with asthma and children under 5.

Ugh, so scared of this! My son is two and has no breathing conditions but it still scares me. Plus I have one on the way.

It's mainly in the Midwest. It's called enterovirus D68. It causes asthma type symptoms even in kids who don't have asthma. Most kids do just fine with it and the media is really overblowing the risks.

@Vegmama: it's similar to rhinovirus, but it is not a rhinovirus.

@LAZB: there are many virus vaccines. This virus has only been discovered in the 1960's and has not been a frequent infectious agent, so that's why there isn't a vaccine. Also some virus types that are hard to create vaccines for-- rhinovirus is one of those.

@Mrs. Jacks: I guess I should have said viruses like this one, adenovirus, rhinovirus, etc. Things that seem like a common cold, but can sometimes be very serious or deadly.

I am terrified of this. We pulled LO from daycare last year due to bronchlitis, RSV and asthma. We just started again last week. I am so nervous.

I should say that in my job , I'm on the front lines of this and while we are busier than normal for this time of year, I don't see any indication for panic or pulling kids out of childcare. We'll see how it plays out, but many of my colleagues in areas affected early are already seeing it die down.
