This might have been answered in the past but, when you get an epidural, do you automatically get a catheter? Do they take the catheter out before the epidural wears off?

In my case, yes, it seemed like the catheter was standard. It makes sense because you cant get out of bed anymore so you cant walk to the bathroom. I think they put it in after the epi because i dont remember feeling it. It came out before i moved off the labor and delivery floor.

Yes. It is my understanding that they are standard with the epi since you are also on strict bed rest while medicated.
Mine was removed after L&D but before my epi completely wore off,. However I had to get another one, unmediated, before moving to recovery since I could not empty my bladder on my own (shy bladder and the nurse said I had X mins to pee making the situation worse). The second one was a little more noticeable but it could be because I just passed a child out of my vagina, you know?

yes, catheter went in after epi took effect. Didn't even feel any pressure let alone discomfort! After delivery I really had to pee but epi was still in effect so they put another one in... and I totally filled a huge tub full of pee thru the catheter. So embarassing.

@chopsuey119: lol.
Yep, I had one too. Didn't notice it going in or coming out. They removed it before I left the birthing suite. It wasn't a drama.

Yes, a foley catheter is standard at my hospital. I found it very uncomfortable, but I also asked for a lighter dosed epidural, so that is probably why I noticed. They took it out before I started pushing- I was so happy to have it taken out.
