Do you use them? I'd love to learn more. I went to class on them once but lost contact with the woman who ran the class. I'd love to hear more. I'm curious if you find they help you and in what ways?

My friend recently got me DoTerra ones! I was mentioning to her that the Vicks stuff we used for DD is a little strong so she recommended the breathe blend and also got me lavender. I've only started using it, but at least the smell is more pleasant that Vicks and I feel good knowing that it's natural!

I use them. I don't know if they help, but they don't hurt! I have an immunity roller ball I use on my kids to keep their immunities up. I diffuse "thieves" from young living when someone is sick. I used ginger when I had a stomach bug and peppermint when I had a hang over. I prefer diffusing them to make the house smell nice than using a candle. I was *going* to use some to help with contractions if I needed it, but baby came really nearly on his own!

I was given a diffuser for the holidays. I purchase Plant Therapy sampler roll on and a sleeping "synergy" mix. Can't wait!

I know nothing about essential oils really, but I've heard some people talk about using them on their children (and dogs even!!) to help calm them or to help with sleep. Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

@runnerd: Yeah, I have a friend who is really into doTerra essential oils and she recommends a drop of frankincense on baby's head (diffused in a carrier oil!) before bed. We just got some today so we are going to try it!

My family is really into young living. They talk about it all.the.time. It gets a little annoying. Haha.
I think they can be good for somethings. I get headaches often, and I have a headache blend- and it works maybe 50% of the time, which is nice since I tend to take a lot of medication so it has allowed me to cut back on unnecessary meds.
We also used the respiratory comfort blend on my son when he had croup and it worked nearly identically to Vicks. I was surprised at how quickly his breathing improved.
I also like thieves for disinfecting and immune (can't really prove how much it supports immune health though). There have been microbiology experiments that evaluate the anti microbial properties of thieves and it's very strong for disinfecting.

My parents are really into Do Terra and they give me blends. I've used them to help me sleep, some feel nice on burns and stuff, I put lemon in my water so my cat won't drink out of my cups...

I really like them. I signed up to distribute for young living but just for discount. When my kids have colds I can practically hear them gulping the snot to clear them up when I put peppermint and eucalyptus on their chests. There are some others I like. If they do get sick though I still take them to the dr!

Another doterra user! I use lavender and I do sleep more soundly w it. I've used on guard on ds1 which is good for when he's got a cold.

I use YoungLiving. They have been magic for LO's sleep, my stress, my cramps, their coughs and healing a few minor burns I've gotten. Great for spot treating break outs too. I also use them to clean the house. Lemon is a great stain remover! I can't live without them! I distribute YL so if you're looking for info just wall me. No pressure, I'm sure you want to do research on all the different companies and such.

@runnerd: for my littlest I diffuse lavender and Tangerine (when we were room sharing I loved it too! But we only have one diffuser right now so I do without). For my oldest I use lavender or Cedarwood. Both calm her down and get her body still in a matter of minutes. Even when she's sick it helps her calm down. I usually only oils on my oldest if she's having trouble sleeping
ETA: I started turning the diffuser on in my youngests room right before I went to bed at night and she dropped her 1am feed! She is 50/50 on STTN now. I really think the oils helped her sleep deep enough to drop that feed.

@runnerd: Cedarwood and lavender have been awesome for us (both the kids and parents!) for sleep. And Plant Therapy (my favorite, non-MLM oils company that has certified aromatherapists that work for them just to help their customers) has a lot of Kid Safe blends that are pre-diluted and some specific blends for sleep for kids and also calming them down which is also key for sleep.

@mrsjyw: do you put the lavender on you or diffuse?
You ladies who use them for sleep on your children...are you diffusing or using topically in a carrier oil?
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
@Mrs D: When I use lavender for sleep, I use it topically but it's very diluted which is important to me since it's on the kids. If I use an oil blend for calming or for a bad cough or something I always diffuse it in their rooms - about 15 minutes and then shut it off.

Following. My mom is big into young living and she gave me a diffuser and some oils for Christmas.
I have been using it our room but will use it in DD's if she gets congested or sick... interested in what to use for that...
ETA: I have peppermint, lavender, relieve it and thieves.

@Mrs D: i put it on my chest before bed. The onGuard is a blend that I put directly onto DS1's feet and sometimes chest.

My husband got a diffuser, we're currently diffusing lavendar, but he's told me he doesn't like it so I am looking for something else. Any suggestions?

So someone just said oils can open you up too much and let in more sickness. I've never heard this.
grapefruit / 4545 posts
@coopsmama: Just seeing this old thread...I just got a bottle of on guard freebie...why is it not kiddo safe?
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
@Mrs D: According to Robert Tisserand, author of Essential Oil Safety and a leading expert on oils, eucalyptus and - I think - rosemary, can cause respiratory distress in children under 10. It's rare, but can happen. Personally if your children have been exposed before with no ill reactions it's probably fine but the safest option is to use a blend that has similar benefits but has completely kid safe oils. I like this blend for that purpose: https://www.planttherapy.com/germ-destroyer
And I promise I don't work for that company. I just really appreciate their commitment to educating their customers and helping us to safely use oils! I also feel like they don't make crazy promises about what oils can do unlike some of the MLM companies. I LOVE my oils and have seen a lot of benefit for my family be it with treating acne, helping kids to fall asleep, treating migraines, etc. when paired with their guidance and direction but I love that they don't promise the moon!

@coopsmama: Do you use a lot of the Plant Therapy oils? I've been thinking of trying them out instead of the (more expensive) doTERRA oils.
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
@tlcbaby: I do. I actually started out using DoTerra - I bought one of their larger starter kits and really did have good success with their oils as well but PT is a fraction of the price as you said and I have had just as good of success and have liked some of their blends a whole lot more even. (Specifically the KidSafe formulas.)

@coopsmama: Thanks for the reply! I joined doTerra for whole sale prices a month ago - the team I am a part of is incredibly responsible with their statements and there are two RNs who are "leaders" and often chime in. I have not used the OnGuard blend yet (I just got it for free) as I make my own blends from the oils...so I was just curious what was bad in the OnGuard one.
My 3 years old used Breathe a lot last winter...which definitely has eucaplytus in it...I doubt it has rosemary but I'll check. Everything they have told me about Breathe is to wait until 18 mos to diffuse...2 years to apply topically (only bottom of feet)...I'll ask about OnGuard on the next info call.
I currently use Lemon & Arborvitae on my 5 mos old...I had great results with it breaking up a chest cold...(1 drop of each in a 10ml roller).

@coopsmama: I ordered tea tree and lavender, can't wait to try them out!
nectarine / 2750 posts
@Mrs D: I've used OnGuard and Breathe even around 18 months, just heavily diluted. That being said, I am gonna try the Plant Therapy ones to see how I like them.
grapefruit / 4466 posts
@tlcbaby: I'm also a big fan of Plant Therapy. I've received some DoTerra and YL oils as gifts, and I like Plant Therapy oils equally well. I also like the vibe of the company - for example, they tell you to dilute oils for topical application to a much greater extent than YL does, the reason being in part that essential oils evaporate really fast when they are not bound with particles in a carrier oil, so you can get the same effect by further diluting since it prevents evaporation to a greater extent. I really like that they give an honest assessment of this, even though they'll sell less oil as a result. And huge plus that it's not MLM. Like @coopsmama: I don't work for them or anything like that, just enjoy their products...
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@coopsmama: I completely agree with you! My friend is a rep for DoTerra (just really to buy for herself) so I just got it through her having NO idea how expensive they are! Now I buy from Plant Therapy esp b/c of their Kid Safe line!
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
@Mrs D: Yes, again, it's personal to how you use them. I do really think EOs are powerful stuff and think they should be used with safety and caution so I appreciate when companies hold themselves to a high standard at least with how they promote their oils! And then it's user discretion at that point. I have used Breathe on my young toddlers as well, but wouldn't diffuse it around or near other children just because of the slight risk unless their parent said it was okay!
@tlcbaby: I hope you like them! I've been very satisfied by PT as a company. They also have a wonderful Facebook group if you're interested - Safe Essential Oil Recipes - where you can interact with their certified aromatherapists for free.
@periwinklebee: @snowjewelz: Hooray for more PT fans!
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@coopsmama: I'm so lazy so I just love the different blends they already have haha! And the price! I got 3 bottles of DoTerra and I was already like
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
@snowjewelz: Which blends are your favorite? My favorite is Calming the Child! It's invaluable both for my kids...and for me. And I love that it's safe for pregnancy.
