Just did a milk challenge with Xander for the second time and he failed again. I'm so bummed. He hates these challenges and it's torture trying to get him to drink the milk, so just knowing we will have to come back and try AGAIN sucks.

I'm so sorry. My daughter failed a peanut challenge after a negative skin test and it was so hard not to get my hopes up that she would pass. It's so hard to go through all that and then be disappointed.

@snowjewelz: Thanks.
@Aria: Aww, I'm sorry! My other son is allergic to peanuts, but he has a host of other food allergies too, so I've already convinced myself that will be a life-long allergy for him.

I don't have any experience with allergies so this might be a dumb question but is there a reason you can't opt out and just continue to treat him as allergic?

@gotkimchi: The food challenges are absolutely optional. We chose to do it in the hopes that he would pass and be able to add so many new foods to his diet!

I'm sorry! Was it baked dairy he failed? We are going through this too
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Pollywog: No, he passed the baked milk challenge when he was 3 (he's 4.5 now). This is the milk challenge, which is drinking regular cow's milk directly.
ETA: Good luck to you!!

@Adira: so he drinks milk gets anaphylactic and then gets epinephrine or steroids?
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Pumuckl: No, he just started sneezing and got a couple hives. They stopped the challenge and gave him Benadryl and the hives cleared right up and he was fine an hour later. I don't think they'd do a milk challenge if they thought he might have an anaphylactic reaction (they didn't suggest a milk challenge until his blood test came back fairly low). At the challenge though, they start by just giving 1 mL, then waiting 10 minutes and checking his vitals, then 2 mL, 10 minutes and check, 5 mL, 10 minutes and check, and increasing the dosage until he can drink ~6 oz without a reaction. He was on the last dose (the 6 oz) when he started to have a reaction, and we stopped.

@Adira: ah, that sounds a lot more sensible! ️ Bummer he had nearly made it and then reacted

@Adira: Oh man I'm sorry, that sucks. The bright side is he did so great for most of it...that would make me feel better about accidental ingestions / cross-contamination slip ups at least. He's getting so close!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Pumuckl: @HappyBaker: haha, yeah, he was so close to passing!! Now we have to wait and just redo it and we're supposed to avoid regular milk for now. But I do feel like he's a lot less likely to have issues if he accidentally ingests some!

Ugh, I'm sorry! That stinks. But, as you and some others have said, that is great he made it so far!! Hopefully that is a bit of peace of mind, in case he accidentally has a little. Hopefully that can ease some worry. Lame that he has to go back, though.

@Adira: How do you know if you need to test food allergies? I am clueless on food allergies and my baby's doctor hasn't said anything.

I'm so sorry. As a fellow allergy mom, I feel your pain. It sucks to watch our little ones go through all that.

@Adira: is their any chance he could do it with ice cream or chocolate milk next time so it's an actual treat? LO is MSPI (not allergic), so I got to have fun testing. We are finally good with yogurt and baked cheese.
@agold: my LO got hives from breastmilk (to eggs). Most show hives/vomiting when you start solids. It differs from intollerances which were green, slimy poop in our LO

@theotherstark: @ninja: Thank you.
@agold: When he was 8 months, I gave him yogurt for the first time and he immediately had an anaphylactic reaction. Trip to the ER, a prescription for an Epi-Pen, a follow-up with our pediatrician, and a referral to an allergist who confirmed the allergy. I wouldn't worry about it too much, but just be aware that a food allergy is possible, especially when introducing the top allergens for the first time.
@Pollywog: We actually did it with chocolate milk. I don't think he liked the taste though because he's so used to the taste of the hemp milk he drinks.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Seriously! Hopefully if I give it a year before we try again, he'll pass! And maybe the reason it's torturous is because he's starting to feel a reaction coming on, so maybe if he's really not allergic anymore, it won't be so hard.

@Adira: I bet he will! I am really hoping P's issues aren't an allergy but just an intolerance that she will outgrow.

He's making great progress! Hopefully he will pass next time. LO1 didn't pass his milk challenge last year when given his first small dose of ice cream.

@yin: Thanks! Bummer your LO didn't pass either. Will you redo anytime soon?
