I bought my friend some stuff off her registry but I want to include a few extra items. She gave away all of her daughter's infant stuff when they moved so she doesn't have any baby toys.
What were some of your LO's favorite baby toys. (Real toys and not stuff around the house. 
) I'm thinking an O-ball or Winkel and maybe something else?

I know they are expensive but DS loves his Sophie the giraffe. Oball and the oball car is a face as well

Oball, Sophie, the bag of Infantino balls that come in various colors and textures she seriously LOVEs these two mini plush monkeys she has. One is Carters and one is Fisher Price. They are literally no-frills stuffed animals, but they are small and perfect car seat buddies.

LO still plays with the bag of infantino balls that @SweetCaroline: mentioned. I got it at Target.
You could also do teethers, a taggie blanket, high chair or car seat toy.

The industructible book series is pretty cool. I just bought one for my niece. Apparently you can't break them in any way so they're great for babies.

Both the OBall and the Winkle have been my LO's favorite, I don't think you can go wrong with them.

My kids both went crazy for the fake plastic keys on rings. And Sophie.

My son was such a large gross motor skills baby that he didn't care for many small toys. He mostly liked the baby gym, the activity table, jumparoo, and walker - the stuff where you're moving around.
He really didn't start playing with smaller things that much until he was 10 months old. Hated Sophie, didn't care about the O ball, sigh. He started playing with some stuffed animals since a year and at 15 months plays with MegaBlocks and stacking things.
Oh, he DID like bath toys - those are small. Like stacking cups with holes in them, rubber duckies, etc. But he just loves baths in general.

@gingerbebe: Exact same for us. I'm trying to think of any small toys that were big hits and I can't. She was really into the Kick n' Play activity gym! And she loved the jumperoo.
