you need cookingware, servingware, and play food at a minimum. i can tell you after 5 years it still gets endless play and we've had it since 9 months!

15 month old son loves his Melissa and Doug pots and pans! We don't have any food, but that's a good Christmas gift idea!

The Hape accessories really are fun - we have the nespresso-style coffee maker, stand mixer, and toaster. My girls also really love the Melissa &Doug cookie set, the Learnibg Resources Munch It basket (a good starter assortment of foods), and making sandwiches. The v-tech teapot/cake set is another fave, but it's really. Iust and annoying!

Love the M&D wood set but not till they're older. When they're younger all they do is chew on it and the paint chips. I love ikea felt food m. Hape wooden accessories are on my wish list for her. Maybe next time there's an Amazon deal I'll finally buy it.
When they're older like 2.5-3, the fruits and vegetables that's Velcro together and they can "slice" are really fun too!

Melissa and Doug food sets, Learning Resources baskets of food, Re-Play bowls and utensils, Green Toys plates, Kid Kraft pots and pans, and Ikea felt foods. I agree that the play kitchen gets a lot of play. We've had one since LO1 was a year old, and it gets daily play 3.5 years later with two kids.

P.S. I got ALL their food/accessories from a local resale group for $40. There was a ton of Melissa and Doug stuff in there. I just washed everything in hot soapy water.

The Ikea stainless pots and pans. We got a set like this from Costco last Christmas with her kitchen. It has a mixer, blender, and coffee maker. She LOVES them. They turn, spin, make noise, etc. This is the set they have this year. She also got a bunch of the M&D cutting food, pizza, and birthday cake has hand me downs and she loves those too. She isn't into the other play (plastic) food as much. Other then putting the fruit into her blender to make tea.

The Melissa and Doug wooden play food is awesome.
Her absolute favourites are the real life things that we recycled and I've washed out (ie: hand soap container, yogurt cups, etc)
