Ok! I have one million, and I'd be happy to make neighborhood specific suggestions too. But Podnah's for bbq, absolutely. The Hawthorne carts are kind of fading, but still have much of their original silly hipster glory. Any Blue Star location is awesome for crazy fancy donuts, and if you need a burger fast, Little Big Burger fantastic. Be sure to try their truffle fries. Lardo is also awesome for various meat based foods.
Oh, I forgot one of my favorite places - Helser's. Try it on a weekday when you won't have to wait as long. And Pine State! I could go on and on.

Don't know if you are up to going outside Portland a little, but I loved the McMenamin's Edgefield "resort". I used quotes because it is a large site with hotel, restaurants, pubs, but you could just go there to eat. They also have other McMenamins locations within Portland that are also interesting, like Kennedy School. They often renovate old historic buildings for their locations. Pretty cool vibe, good beer & interesting. Check it out!

@sarac: thanks! It is for my husband and his friends...I think one of them made a reservation for Little Bird Bistro for French food but they are winging it for the rest of their trip.
I don't remember exactly where they are staying...I want to say the SW area?
Mmmm donuts!

@autumnlove: Little Bird is great. If you want to do something unusual check out Beast. I love the rooftop bar at the Nines-such amazing views. And I've heard the food is good at Departure is good too.
For fast unique eats check out Brunchbox.

We were there a couple years ago and I still think of the food sometimes. We didn't eat anywhere fancy but my favorites were Lardo (sandwiches), Grassa (fresh pasta), and the Gaufre Gourmet which is a food truck which has ridiculously yummy waffles. I was pregnant when I was there and it was like food heaven!

@autumnlove: This kinda got my hopes up for a meet-up @Rainbow Sprinkles: that would've been so much fun!!
Also if they're going to be going outside of Portland Subterra in Newberg is so good, and mentioned above the Edgefield. It's basically an entire day wandering around the grounds to different small bars and cigar shops with a golf course!

Swiss Hibiscus...Swiss & European foods at super reasonable prices. Their goulash and spatzli are to die for. I wish I had some now. Small family owned restaurant, very friendly.

Papa Hyden for dessert/drinks! I used to live in NW and it was dangerous being only a few blocks from there.
