We've started trying to give LO a pacifier when she's super fussy and seems to want to suck, but so far no luck. She will suck it for a minute until it pops out of her mouth. I'll try for a few minutes until I realize it's not going to work, and then I'll feed her. I feel like I'm feeding her as a pacifier when she's upset because sometimes she'll only eat on one breast for like 5-10 minutes and she's out cold. How do you know if your baby is just fussy and wanting comfort, or truly hungry?

I'm in the same position as you. my baby nurses for comfort as well as for food. she doesnt like pacifiers at all, she just spits it out of her mouth. My pedi says with breastmilk you cant really over feed so I just let her nurse whenever she wants for now

Liv never took a paci from us. She would from the nanny, but only the gumdrop kind that arent the standard nipple shape. And she couldnt really keep them in her mouth, they always popped out too.

My son will also nurse for comfort. He'll take a pacifier sometimes, like when we are out, but at home I usually offer him the boob. When he is using it for comfort he isn't continually sucking and his sucks are a lot softer. He also tends to have a shorter latch which hurts like hell sometimes. I usually have to pop him off at that point.

My LO never liked the pacifier. She eventually found her thumb and that helps her for comfort. Do you keep any sort of schedule to know when you're LO last ate and napped? Usually if your LO has eaten recently and isn't tired, you'll know that it's a comfort thing.

Have you tried different binks? My DD only like avent binks right now. She rejects the mama or the odd shaped ones. We introduced it cause she already was sucking her thumb which she still does but considerably less with the bink. I figure we can take the bink away one day we can't take her hand!
