I vote budget. He won't necessarily destroy it, but I don't buy high-end stuff for my kids because I don't want to worry about them possibly ruining something I spent hundreds of dollars on.

I'd do budget but sturdy. Some IKEA stuff is fine and will last a long time, others not so much.

I wouldn't bother with Pottery Barn. It's not far from IKEA as far as quality.

Because of space, we're going with a twin bed, to start. We can upgrade when she's older and we're in a larger home.

I actually quite like the look of the affordable Minnen bed at Ikea, and it's currently a top contender for us. Otherwise, we'll check out a "nude" wooden furniture place that's local to us.

I'll echo @oliviaoblivia: I find Pottery Barn to be a far cry from high quality. Expensive, sure, but I'd go elsewhere if you're hoping for a lasting product.

We went for Costco (which carries sealy and stuff) mostly because of the return policy. If a spring pops or something we can deal with them.

I wouldn't assume your son will destroy his bed. It will only be destroyed if you allow that sort of behavior.

Growing up, my siblings and I all had antique furniture. We grew up in a 200 year old house, and my brother had and I both had furniture that belonged to 3 and 4 times great grandparents. I still have the bed and dresser I grew up with.

Other than having to clean boogers off my brother's headboard, there was no destroying done. But we also pretty much were only in our rooms to sleep. We had few toys in them and no art supplies or anything. And because we had older furniture, the whole jumping on the bed rule was so much more strict!

I would get nice, solid furniture (I don't necessarily consider Pottery Barn to be that).

My parents move me to a twin bed when I was 15 months old and was climbing out of my crib. I am about to turn 29 and my parents still have the bed they got me at 15 months old and it still works great. Quality wood furniture should last just fine so long as you don't tolerate destructive behavior.

@Myicitygirl: I'm not familiar with them, but maybe the platform isn't a good idea. Don't they have sharp corners? What about just putting the mattress/box spring on a frame? You could get a headboard later.

@Myicitygirl: For what it's worth, we just bought a T&N mattress for ourselves (love it!!!!) and just bought a simple platform bed without a headboard off of Amazon for less than $150. It's metal and not wood but it has worked really well. No sliding at all but there is the risk of stubbing your toe on it as there would be with any bed with legs.

I think it depends. My parents bought us really solid twin bed frames, and they lasted us a very long time.

If we go Ikea, we will go with a platform bed or metal bed. We have a $79 Ikea crib, and we've used it for the last two years. However, we'll have to get a new crib for the next baby, because the wood is so soft that the holes that hold the pegs are getting too big and causing the mattress to sag. I don't know what we'll do when it comes time for us to transition her to a big girl bed.

I voted "other"- we got DD1 a solid antique/vintage bed. It's a twin, and we have a full in storage. They're made so well, look classic (it's like a Jenny Lind bed) and I plan on her or her sister using it until college.
