The trick with mums is keeping them trimmed until july 4th. Then they'll be nice and ready to bloom from august into the fall. If they're going that crazy you might still be able to trim them back a bit, depending where you are there's probably enough good weather that they'll make a good recovery and still give good blooms.

There are sooooo many flowering perennials. Where you live will determine the ones that thrive in your area. I'm in Colorado and have lavender, shasta daisies, blanket flowers, russian sage, salvia, and butterfly bushes which all bloom throughout the summer. I would recommend going to a local nursery during a quieter time (week day if possible) and having someone help you. We planted our plants just based on their recommendations before we knew much and have a lovely, thriving yard now.
