My 10 month old just went for a follow up visit after having an ear infection following a terrible cold that went through our house. The infection is gone, but the pediatrician saw fluid in her ear(s). My husband took the baby to the appt. We go back again in 3 weeks, or sooner if she gets sick again.
Has this ever happened to baby? What can this lead to? Did it just resolve itself for any of your babies?

My DS had chronic fluid in his ears. Meaning that for over 3 months every time we went to ped he had fluid. It wasn't necessarily infected.
He ended up having tubes... actually 2 sets of tubes

Our ped said it can take up to like 6 weeks for fluid to be gone from the ears after an infection. That is why it is so easy to get recurrent ear infections. We were one infection away from getting tubes for my oldest, luckily he didn't need them.
My youngest has never had an ear infection but he did have fluid in his ears when we went in for a check up (he had some kind of nasty virus, fever for days). The fluid never got infected and eventually went away.

@Ajsmommy: Oh, no. I'm so sorry he has had to have two sets of tubes. Is he able to go swimming since he has the tubes?
@KT326: yes, we just dealt with a terrible nasty virus that caused high fevers for days. Interesting about taking 6 weeks to go away. Did you take any precautions during that time, such as not washing your baby's hair or anything like that?

@agold: Nope, no extra precautions. Our ped said as long as he doesn't go under water, very little water will actually get into his ears during a bath.

@agold: yes, there are no restrictions. We were told to protect them for the first week after insertion but no other warnings or restrictions

My son has fluid a lot. He had a lot of ear infections and is growing out of it now (just turned 5). We avoided tubes- I think only because he wasn’t in day care and didn’t have a lot of colds (compared to a lot of my friends kids who have the constant all winter cold). Because literally for the first 4 years a of his life he got an ear infection with every single cold.

@Mrs. Champagne: Very good to know. Awesome your boy avoided the tubes. I hope I can do the same for my littlest girl. My kids aren't in day care yet. But my big girl does now go to sunday school and dance every week, and also increasingly more birthday parties. So I think she's getting more exposed to things. Preschool in the fall, and I'm really nervous about bringing home sickness.

@agold: 90% of kids clear fluid within 12 weeks so just follow up and see. Both my kids had tubes though

@gotkimchi: Thanks for this info! We go back in 3 weeks, so I hope it is gone by then. My little baby has also dealt with laryngomalacia. I'm hoping she also doesn't have to deal with fluid in her ears, too.

Same experience as @Ajsmommy but only 2 actual infections over 2-3 years.. We also ended up with tubes but mostly because he failed 4 hearing tests due to the constant fluid build up and speech issues. I would just keep an eye on it.

Same as others - he had chronic fluid that wasn’t allowing him to hear properly or start talking. So we did tubes and it was a lifesaver. That said, he had MUCH more than one ear infection with residual fluid before anyone started talking about surgery!
