How old was your dog when you start taking them on runs? Were they well behaved right away? Did they pull on the leash?
Right now our dog is 8 months old, he's a chocolate lab mix with a ton of energy. He's not a very good leash walker, he pulls a ton! When I bring him on runs, he is normally ok while running, but once I slow down and walk for a bit, he darts off and pulls as hard as he can. Also if there are other people around or dogs, oh boy....

Our trainer recommended a prong collar and it worked really well for us. She used to pull so hard I thought her windpipe would break. She is much more comfortable this way.

Maybe it'd be best if you trained your pup to heel before starting running with him?

@Mrs Green Grass: I have a prong collar that we use with him, and it works wonders (compared to only his collar and leash) but DH doesn't want to take him running with his prong collar any more. When we went on Monday he pulled so hard while running with the prong collar on, we are so afraid of him actually hurting himself with it on.

@pui: I have a feel that probably would be best. I just feel horrible going out for a run, and leaving the pup at home you know? He loooves exercise, he would run and run all day long if we let him! But I totally understand and that probably is the best route.

@MrsBrewer: Perhaps do both? Take him on the run and when you slow down, train him to heel while you're recovering?

@Mrs Green Grass: I have a feeling you're right. We took a puppy training class. While it was very informative, they spent 1 class (60 minutes) on leash training. Definitely not enough!
Do you prefer classes or private training? I'm sure private training is better, but is it worth the extra $$

@pui: that's a great idea! walking at a slow pace when working with pup will probably let me recover faster, and run more? hmm.... win win? hahah

@MrsBrewer: I'd recommend a gentle leader. It is much gentler than the pronged collars and is more like a horse halter and controls the dogs head. If they pull their head turns and they cant really go forward because the head is being controlled. We have two 80 labs and my five year old neighbor can walk our dogs when the gentle leaders are on.

@MrsBrewer: Please check with your vet regarding how far your pup should be running with you at this. It can affect his joints down the road.
There are some great videos out there on loose leash walking. I like the "silky leash" method (cheesy name, but good advice). You could also pay for one session and focus just on this.

I waited until my dog was almost a year to run with. I was told their joints are fully formed until then and it's not good for them.

I mostly run with my dog on fire roads where he can be off leash, but when I run with him on the leash I find a harness is much more convenient. He pulls less and it's more pleasant for both of us.
