When the baby wakes up in the middle of the night to feed and is STARVING (aka crying like a banshee) do you take the time to warm the bottle? How do you keep your screaming baby at bay?

Our baby will take a bottle straight out of the fridge... We did that from day one so that we wouldn't have the banshee problem, though we still do sometimes!

Are you bottlefeeding breastmilk or formula?
I prepare bottles ahead of time by measuring out the correct amount of formula into the bottle and put it next to the sink; then, when DS is starving and screaming, I just pour in the correct amount of warm tap water, shake, and feed. The whole process takes like 30 seconds (although, sometimes that seems like an enternity!).

We didn't have this problem during the night but occasionally during the day so we just grabbed it out of the fridge and LO didn't seem to mind cold milk...in fact we think she liked it!! Warm seemed tO put her to sleep but cold might have been somewhat unsettling to her tummy. We never figured that out. Can you try giving your baby cold? I read yesterday that there is no medical reason to warm it. Also, does your baby just wake up screaming? Ours always grunted and squirmed a while first...took a long time to get up to screaming. Maybe if you hear that fury, you'd have more time tO warm bottle before a meltdown?

We used to do what @Honeybee: does (but in reverse, we put in the water and then added the formula). Now we have a big Dr. Brown's pitcher that we mix up the nighttime batch in and leave in the fridge.

@Mrs. Jacks: @Honeybee: @LouLouBelle: Thanks! It's pumped breastmilk. I thought/read that warming is better for gas and DS has tummy troubles already so I assumed I should warm it up (though DS doesn't seem to mind cold milk, so should I bother?). I'm such a zombie that (at least for the first nighttime feed) by the time I hear him he's crying! Last night my husband had to wake me up because I was so dead to the world.

I feed my lo pumped milk as well, and i give it to her at room temp. I used to warm it but had the same screaming problem you do. If your lo insists on drinking it warm, i'd try storing the milk in a plastic bag (like lansinoh) and then running it under warm water. Warms the milk faster than in a bottle!

@winniebee: Your honey should have done that feed. He's at least used to working overnights and can function on limited sleep! I found I definitely handle middle of the nights better than Mr. Jacks because of my training
Hugs!

LO never cried in the middle of the night from hunger, but I would carry her down with me, heat a mug of water in the microwave, stick the bottle in the mug and by the time we walked back upstairs the milk was pretty much warm and ready.

@Mrs. Jacks: Haha - well, last night, I was still feeding from the breast so he couldn't do that feeding! But now that we'll be bottle feeding, he can definitely take some feeds ; )
@betsyboop: Thanks for the tip!

I always warm them. C much prefers it that way and takes the bottle and goes back to sleep easier when they're warm.

@winniebee: I sometimes run hot tap water over it while I swirl it.

I usually warm it up just enough. It is a tad cool, I don't worry about it. I feel better if isn't cold bc my son has the same reflux/tummy issues your little guy seems to have.

I pump right before bed and leave a small bottle of it on the counter since I go by the 6-8 hour suggestion for room temperature breastmilk, but I live on the edge and pump around midnight That way it is ready to go in the middle of the night, and if he doesn't wake me up, he will get it first thing early in the morning.
@Mrs. Jacks- I didn't know it was ok to give a newborn cold milk... noting this for next time around to start the conditioning early!

We do the same as Honeybee, and it works for us even though LO progesses extremely quickly from awake to screaming banshee she is fine with a cool or room temp bottle.

I forgot to add that I pre-prepare the bottles and put them in the fridge. Then I pop them in the microwave for 30 seconds and feed her. I usually make about 4-6 and that usually lasts through the next day.

We don't premake bottles. We put on filtered water from the fridge and let it sit overnight so it's room temp. Then when we need it we just put some formula scoops in and shake. But if for some reason we are slacking, she'll drink it cold.
