Tell me your opinion and why? Fruits or veggies first when starting purées or it didn't matter?

We did mainly veggies but always mixed a bit of fruit in. Australia doesn't follow the one food for three days rule so we started DD at 6 months on combos like broccoli, peas, and pears or butternut squash, carrots and apples. We're visiting the US now so I mix two jars together for DD and do about 75% veggies and 25% fruit. No real reason for it other than it makes sense to me to go heavier on the veg.

I don't think it matters in the beginning. It took weeks for LO to actually eat and enjoy anything.

We've been doing cereals and I was about to start with pears and a friend freaked out in me and said not to do fruit first! I don't see why it matters either.

Everyone told me to do veg first so LO wouldn't develop a sweet tooth and later refuse veggies. We started on fruits and moved to veggies next though, since I felt like fruits were more likely to get her interested in food and less likely to give her gas pains (something that we have an issue with). Luckily she loves her fruits, but also eats her vegetables w/o objection, so far.

@matador84: Pears are a great first food. Especially since starting solids can cause constipation for a while.

Our pediatrician told us it didn't matter. We started with sweet potatoes though but that was mainly because it was Thanksgiving and it seemed fun.

@weagle @belugabean @pinkelephant what age did you all start? DS is almost 5 months. Funny how opinions vary among pediatricians!

Our pediatrician also told us it didn't matter. And since we didn't have any food allergies in our family we didn't have to follow the three day rule. We started at 6 months.

@matador84: We started at 5.5 months. At the 4 month appointment, the ped said to hold off until 6 months, but that we could start sooner if she was ready. She told us that we would just "know" and to skip cereal. She was right!

I've read it doesn't matter. Breast milk/formula is sweet so I think babies already prefer sweeter foods.

@MungBean: Yeah, the AAP says that babies already have a preference for sweeter foods when they are born, so holding off on sweeter foods doesn't make a difference.
We started at 6 months with avocado, then banana, sweet potato, and pear.

I don't think it matters, but we will be starting with a veggie...just because

We used a lot of Plum Organics packets at the beginning, which pretty much all have fruits mixed in with the veggies. It seems to have worked fine for us b/c DD will still eat almost anything.

I tried giving veggies I made but LO really disliked them. Then, we gave him fruit and veggie mixes and he was happier to eat. In the end LO wasn't big on baby food and instead just preferred what we ate and when that's what we feed him we had the most success with his eating.

Never worried about it. Now my toddler is a fruit addict and likes veggies a lot too. Pretty good outcome IMHO.

@MungBean: exactly! I always thought the idea was a bit silly when breast milk is so sweet anyway.

We did veggies first. Supposedly fruits first can cause a sweet tooth.

@Ree723: not allowed in Australia? haha how could they mandate whether baby food is mixed or not? And you could make your own right, and serve just one fruit or veggie - right??

@Mrs. Pen: lol, now that would be interesting to regulate! No, it's not that they advise against doing it, it's more that it is seen as unnecessary unless specific circumstances require the introduction of one food at a time for three days. For the most part, stage one food is a combination of two to four vegetables and fruits, so that's what we all start with. I'm quite sure there are people who introduce one food at a time but it doesn't seem to be the norm.

The first foods on her tray were carrots, sweet potatoes, avocado and banana. She barely ate any of them :T
I don't think it really matters all that much though.
