@anonysquire: I have zero to offer because I have a black thumb! But if I were you I'd find a close by nursery and ask for their advice. They would know about your local climate, soil, etc. And the few times I've gone to a nursery (all resulting in tragic plant death) they've been super helpful.

I agree about going to the local nursery for tips on plants that aren't as easy to kill. I would also just but flats and plant those. Instant gratification and you don't have to deal with seeds and bulbs for your first time since those are more fickle and easier to kill.

As for building a bed, you can do it with whatever. Just take an area, put down some plain newspaper, put down a border (you can use pavers or you can use rocks you have around your house). Fill with a few inches of dirt, put in the flowers, and mulch with whatever you want. Put some more newspaper between the soil and the mulch if you are worried about weeds. Make sure to put the bed somewhere where you'll get a lot of rain (not up against the house) so you don't have to do as much watering!
