I think it would be fun to introduce the girls to a little bit of Geography! I'm a book person, but open to any puzzles or even apps that are not too difficult. Bonus if it includes a bit of culture too! Can be as simple as a board book or a little bit more but I don't want a bunch of long paragraphs

We have a couple of different children's atlas of the world books and the girls love them. They're geared for more the 9-12 age group, but we like to flip through them and look at all the pictures. I let the girls point out things they are interested in and then we talk about it a bit more. The books I have have little paragraphs (like two sentences) all around going into a bit more detail about things so I'll read that to the girls as well. I can't remember exactly which atlases we have but I just did a quick google search and they all appear to be quite similar. I think even if the writing is too old for your LOs, the pictures should be stimulating and interesting enough for them!

I'd look into a globe. My son asked for one and I was kind of like, ok, this is too "old" for him at age 4, but he loves it and he now knows currency, language and random facts on a few countries, as well as being able to locate them on the globe.

DD1 got a huge Melissa and doug world map for Christmas. The puzzle was fun but i think geography is a bit much for her right now.

We have maps of the world and United States on our LOs' walls in their bedrooms and play room. We also have globes in each room as well. LO1 loves to ask about our state and where family and friends live. I also teach him about where his grandparents lived before coming to the US. We also have puzzles of the US, but my kids are less interested in that.

It's just taped to their walls. Nothing fancy. In the play room I have a framed colorful map that is more kid friendly. All globes are vintage and found at thrift stores and antique stores. Those are pricey brand new.

@yin: Yeah I was hoping for something kid friendly that wasn't too overwhelming..but do your kids do ok with the regular maps? And I hear you about the globes, didn't even think to look used...I will keep my eye out!

We go for walks in the state park and our local nature centers and DD loves to get a trail map. I'm planning on getting big maps for her playroom. They do a lot with maps and blueprints as teaching tools at her school so she is hooked.

@Bao: Regular maps are nice to expose them to the concept. The younger one doesn't pay attention, but my 4 year old understands a lot. Last year we took a trip to Disney World and drove 15+ hours. I showed him our starting point and ending point in Florida, pointing out the highways we took to get there and how many states we crossed on our way.
We also have this fun Maps book. It's big and has a lot of great illustrations of different countries.
