So I was baptized, and made my first communion, but was never confirmed. DH is not religious whatsoever! However, I've (obviously) always had Godparents, and explained the concept to him.

We've been playing with the idea of naming "honorary" Godparents, since we wouldn't have an actual baptism (or very likely won't). Long story, but his parents turned him off to religion as a whole, so he is not supportive at all with doing a baptism. I'm okay with that.

Has anyone named honorary Godparents before?

What is the job of an honorary God parent? Just curious, I'm a Jew.

No Godparents, but if anything were to happen to us, we've named my parents are LO's guardians.

@artbee: well honorary would only be because we wouldn't do it officially with a baptism. but i believe (this is bad..can you tell i'm no longer really a practicing Catholic?) their role is to take over/take care of LO in the case of something happening to the parents..as well as "teaching them in the way of the Church," I believe. but we would be using it more as a title of a special person in the baby's life - for instance, my mom's sister is my godmother, and is my closest aunt. so we might've named my brother as "godfather", etc.

I never had godparents and felt like I was missing out! We were Jehovah's witnesses when I was young so no dice there.

My DH is an atheist but was raised in the Pentecostal church--he has godparents. We're going to have godparents. We were thinking of doing a baby naming ceremony, basically a "come meet the baby" party and doing some thing to acknowledge her godparents. It's interesting because our baby's godmother and godfathers (yes, 2) are all religious and we're not!

@mrsjazz: that's so interesting you say that - DH was raised JW! his parents still are, and one of his brothers is (the other is not). I don't want to get into it too much because I don't want to accidentally offend you just in case - but DH is so against religion because of how he grew up. he does always get a little sad when holidays/birthdays come up about all he missed as a kid..he can't wait to shower our kids in the things he missed.

that's such a good idea! so instead of a baptism, you'd do the baby name ceremony? I'm still playing with ideas. (and I've got two godmothers, one godfather - we're similar!)

@sorrycharlie: Ha. You won't offend me. I'm agnostic. We left the JWs when I was little (but old enough to remember my first Christmas and birthday party!). Which is why I LOVE MY BIRTHDAY now! My mom then bounced us around various denominations until I'd had enough with religion.

No baptism for us. But we did want to do something special to acknowledge her godparents and gather our friends and family to celebrate the baby. We're totally making the whole thing up to suit what we want.

@sorrycharlie: I thought it was people who help your child spiritually and was wondering why you'd want that, but that makes sense. I had godparents but my parents don't even remember who they are. We're going to decide who we want to take LO if something happens to us, but we'll just make it legal.

we've never had god parents and we don't have any god parents planned for our little ones. our babies would go to either hubby's parents or my brother & sil (i'd prefer them over my hubby's parents)....

We're atheists but are having honorary Godparents (for lack of a better term, I suppose!) for our daughter. We're Godparents now and it's a big deal to my husband, and important to him that our LO has Godparents.

For us (both in our current role as Godparents and what we're looking for in Godparents), what we wanted are people who will be there for LO throughout her entire life, and who can field questions she might have on ethics and religion, but they are not there to advocate any religion; just to answer questions LO might have, or to discuss moral issues or questions she might encounter that she either doesn't want to discuss with us, or wants to get second opinions or more information on. I guess you could say, they are there to provide support to her and additional moral guidance throughout her life.

LO's has 3 Godparents, and it just happens that 1 is a (lapsed) Catholic, 1 is Jewish and 1 is Episcopalian. None are especially religious, but they are lifelong friends and all have good moral/ethical compasses and we trust them all completely with LO.

Instead of a baptism or Christening, we're doing a Naming Ceremony for LO and her Godparents.

I am a non practicing Catholic and my husband is a non practicing Protestant. We were married civilly by a justice of the peace (my dad) and did a vow renewal at our wedding ceremony by a Lutheran minister.

When our son was born, we talked a lot about what godparents mean, and we decided we would name godparents to help guide our son. They are basically there in case he doesn't want to talk to us about something and needs additional advice or opinions. We've got 3 right now, one Catholic, one Muslim and one Protestant. They weren't chosen for their religious views but rather their life experiences.

Guardianship is something completely different, in my world, godparents don't act as guardians.
