I love taking photos but I'm clueless. I have a Nikon D3100 and just got a new 35mm f/1.8 lens. I also have a zoom lens, if that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance! My birthday is on Sunday and my sister is asking for ideas.

I ordered Beyond Snapshots by Rachel Devine when I bought my new dslr last week. I wanted a little refresher and so far I love this book. It is really easy to understand and gives nice examples. You can preview it on Am.azon and b&n if you would like.
Edit- if you have a dslr you should definitely stop using manual! It might be frustrating at first but you will get the hang of it.

I've been reading several books about photographing children, but right now I've gone back to basics - I mean really basic. I actually purchased the Dummies book for my camera (Nikon D90). I bet there would be one for your specific camera too. I got tired of scrolling through all the endless menus on my DSLR and not being quite sure what function each one served. This book really helps with that in non technical language. By the way, your 35mm prime is an awesome lens. I have a 50mm and I love it, but just bought a Nikon 18-200 for a trip after much research. Hope to catch some wildlife shots and my prime won't be much use for that! What kind of zoom do you have?

@Photo Book Girl: I was going to suggest the same thing. Hubs got me the Dummies book for my camera (Olympus PEN-1), and it has really helped me with knowing how to operate MY camera. Especially since mine isn't a true DSLR (it's a micro 4/3s). Finding a book about my specific camera made a huge difference in knowing how to manipulate the settings and what each particular setting means and how it changes the photo.
