I read this yesterday and just tested ours today and it came back positive for lead. So far no recall or official statement.

@T.H.O.U.: I loved them too, I'm so upset- partially because I'd prefer to keep using them!

@Cole: from what I'm reading it's just the writing on the outside of the glass?
How do you test?
grapefruit / 4649 posts
@T.H.O.U.: that is the case for mine thankfully. I used a 3m lead test swab. It's alarming to me that the paint comes off so easily, my other insert doesn't have any paint left on it. I'm also reading that they were trying to pin it on knock offs from Amazon but mine is an insert I ordered directly from iplay.

@Cole: yea I'll have to look at the two I have but they were used for over a year on a daily basis.

What?! I have two-one broke. But it has been used on a daily basis since 6 months... :(. Ah, just the writing. So I am the one impacted I guess.

@Mrs. Goose: I'm also worried about the fact that I touch the paint and then put together the parts that do come in contact with her. I'm not sure how that works though to be honest, if I touch the paint and then the part that goes in her mouth is she getting lead?

@Cole: I don't know! Sigh. I just never even thought something like this would be an issue. We're currently ordering a different sippy off amazon. I'm annoyed.

Whoa!! Yeah, if you're touching the lead, it could transfer, and could get on the outside. Dishwasher? Have you contacted the company? This is crazy.

@littlejoy: I have, they responded on their Facebook page saying to email which I did but so far I have only received an autoreply. They are technically closed though and so far their responses have sounded very concerned.

Oh no! We have 2 of these cups that my daughter uses daily and I juuuuust bought 2 more new glass inserts directly from iplay when I needed straw replacements. I was planning to use the same cups for my son and just swap the inner parts too. I should reach out to them to see what they will do.
Odd question - if I somehow wear gloves and scrub all the paint off then wash it really well, does that solve the problem? I hate that there isn't another safer cup on the market that is not plastic.

@littleveesmommy: munchkin has a stainless steel 360 cup. Might be a good alternative to plastic.

@littleveesmommy: I just bought a thermos foogoo stainless steel sippy.

@Mrs. Goose: That is a great cup you just ordered. We have had ours for five years and it looks exactly the same as the day we bought it.

@808love: I love it so much so far! I wish we had just gotten it from the beginning to be honest. Wouldn't have had to worry about breakage like we did with the green sprout and it was half the price. I also like that the tips are interchangeable on the foogoos. We bought her the thermos foogoo straw cup for water for her for Christmas.

@Cole: Did you hear back?
I just got an email finally:
Thank you for contacting us regarding your concerns about your child’s safety. We appreciate that you have taken the extra step to educate yourself on the materials in products, and also for paying extra for a green sprouts Glass Sip & Straw Cup instead of a plastic one. You are the kind of parent that we want as our customer.
We take your concerns about home screening for lead content in the markings on the glass insert very seriously and have expedited extensive additional testing with accredited laboratories to reconfirm that this product is in compliance and meets all applicable safety standards, including those established by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. We stand behind our products and we have concluded that this product is safe.
At the same time, customer satisfaction is important to us, so we will send you a new glass insert(s) without markings, at no cost to you—this includes shipping and handling. Future shipments of the Glass Sip & Straw Cup will include glass inserts with no markings to remove any lingering concerns you may have.
If you have not already provided us your full mailing address, please fill out this form. Please return your glass inserts in a padded envelope. We will send you a return shipping label within 5-7 business days.
We value you as our customer and sincerely apologize for any concerns and inconvenience this experience may have caused you. We continue to work mindfully to provide high quality products and we hope that you will continue to choose green sprouts for baby-friendly products.
Additionally I got home last night to find the two new inserts already sent to me as well as a copy of their book and a $25 off coupon. I think they have handled this very well.

@T.H.O.U.: Thanks for the tag! I submitted my request and hopefully will be getting the replacements soon.
@Mrs. Goose: I have the Thermos Foogo straw cups too and love them! We've had one for nearly 4 years and good as new. I love that the replacement straws are affordable.

@T.H.O.U.: I got the same package yesterday. All in all I don't think it was handled perfectly but mostly because of the lag time, I was really frustrated that I'd contact them and it would take days if not weeks to get back to me. I'm annoyed that they never admitted they messed up royally but I'm sure that's a function of their law team. I'm glad they did do more than just send new inserts.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@Cole: Yea I couldn't totally understand the email. On one hand it almost made it sound like they were saying they conducted more lab testing and found that they were safe and issuing the replacements just to please customers. But on the other hand, they never directly say that either.
I can kinda understand the lag time because I think it came out pretty suddenly and they probably hand to scramble to figure out how to handle this.

@T.H.O.U.: I'll have to email them! What website did you go on? / what email did you send to? I can only see playbaby. Com when I google green sprouts sippy cup. I don't expect I'll get anything from them because I emailed them asking about a replacement glass insert in December when one of mine broke and they couldn't ship to Canada.
ETA: I found the email I originally contacted them with and asked them what they will be doing for a Canadian customer as the distributor they gave me info for never emailed me back in December.

@littleveesmommy: proof.@808love: I adore the straw cup. It does leak sometimes when turned sideways and open on the floor, but I usually only use it for water so it isn't a huge deal. The sippy cup I really like except it leaks milk if it is tipped upside down or banged on the table. It seems to save up some inside the sippy spout once it has been drank from. It's actually really annoying because we give her milk before bed and read stories and she runs around her room and dances around with it and there are milk stains everywhere now. Sigh. I'm going to consider the safe sippy for our next baby and wonder if that is more leak proof.
