It's just my husband and me (and 2 dogs, for now!) and I would say we eat out/take out 85% of the time. Looking over our budget, I realize just how much money we spend unnecessarily on food, when we could be saving more by cooking at home. We never bulk grocery shop since we don't cook or eat much at home, I only buy things I bring to work (cereal, granola bars, yogurt, etc) and for items needed on the night that I decide to cook, which is probably less than once a week or so. So my question is, for people that cook all the time, how do you know what to buy when you shop in bulk? Do you menu plan all the time? Or do you buy random things and plan your menu around the items that you've already bought? But what about produce and things that go bad quickly? How often do you shop??
I always have a running list on my phone so I can add things as needed. There are some things that I buy every time (such as lemons, apples, asparagus, tea, etc). Those always stay on the list. And I only make 2-3 meals a week, and we then eat leftovers. It's much less stressful for me to only have to cook twice during the week.
