I had my GBS test today, and my doctor expects it to come back positive b/c I actually had a GBS infection when I was a kid (which is very uncommon). Has anyone else tested positive? Did you need IV antibiotics during delivery? I was hoping to labor from home as long as possible, but now I'm wondering if my doctor is going to want me to come in earlier to set up an IV. Ugh.

i wasn't positive with charlie, and with olive i went into labor the day before i was supposed to get tested for it. so they put me on antibiotics anyway at the same time i got my epidural.
do you plan on getting an epidrual?

I am GBS+ and need to have an oral antibiotic when my waters break then 3 x IV antibiotics during labour. Hope this helps! You might be able to have the initial antibiotics at home then wait until you get close?
(I am in Australia btw, just incase we have differing policies!)

I tested negative with RJ, but I think I got it along the way because I just tested positive at my 18 week appt with this baby
I would suggest planning ahead to create a good place in the hospital to labor in case you do need to go early for an IV (they will ask you to!). Most likely you will end up needing an IV for whatever reason at some point in the delivery anyway. If I were you, I'd bring music, an exercise ball, your own pillows/linens, and whatever else you will need to feel comfortable laboring in the hospital. And hey, maybe you won't even need to go in that early, and that'll be a bonus

I am going to have this test in two weeks and I am hoping I am negative because I also want to labor at home for as long as possible

I had my test today, too. I want to labor at home for as long as possible, too. I'm delivering in a birth center, if I'm positive, they will give me the first round and send me home. I hate the idea of the back and forth--here's hoping we're both negative!

I was GBS+. I did not need any oral antibiotics, and normally I'd have gotten intravenous penicillin during delivery, but I'm allergic, so I got clindamycin.
Last I checked on the CDC website, I think the recommendation was to receive a dose of IV antibiotics within 2 hours of delivery, so if you come to the hospital early, you will likely need multiple doses. There is no benefit to coming to the hospital early because you are GBS positive. (I mean, you definitely need the antibiotics, so don't wait too long and risk having the baby in the car, but I'd think you could probably labor at home for longer than the whole contractions-every-five-minutes-for-an-hour guideline and be fine if it's your first baby and therefore likely to take a while. -
I tested positive and my doctor told me that when my contractions were 5-6 mins apart for an hour, to make sure to get to the hospital within 2 hours. I forget why she emphasized that I had to get there within 2 hours. When I got to the hospital, I think I went through 3 IV bags of antibiotics before my LO came out. Hope this helps

@Mrs. Bee: That's the thing. I'm not planning on having an epidural, and even once I get to the hospital I'm hoping to be up and moving around as much as possible. Not strapped to a bed with an IV. In my birth plan I've asked to not have a routine IV unless there's an actual reason. (My hospital apparently doesn't automatically set up an IV line when you are admitted, although I know that many do.)
@Lozza: Do you have a link to that recommendation? I looked around for it a bit, but I couldn't find the recommended timing of the antibiotic dosing.

my concern would be having a super fast labor, and not having enough time to get all the antibiotics you need. that's something you can't really predict, but i'm no expert on the matter!

dammit, i just got my result yesterday at my appointment and doctor said i tested positive. i'll need the iv, even though i'm getting a c-section. that sucks. i was hoping to pass ALL my tests lol.

I delivered at a birth center and got IV antibiotics in labor. They put in a hep lock. Honestly, I was too focused on the contractions to care about the IV (but I preferred to labor standing up, so it wasn't in the way). I didn't have any oher medications for the birth. I'm no expert, but I think the most important thing is to make sure you get the whole first bag of antibiotics. If you can get there with enough time for that (30 minutes maybe) before the 2nd stage, then you will probably not notice the difference.
