My dad helped me with some tough math problems in high school, but other than that i was left on my own!
I'm a little worried with LO because it seems like these days parents are all over "helping" them with their homework. I know some feel as if they have to because other kids are getting help. I really want to teach LO to be independent and not rely on us to help her for a lot of things.
Did your parents help you? Will that affect how much you help your LO?

Science Fair projects? Nope, I was on my own!
I will encourage my kids to do as much as they cab on their own - remind them its "their" project not mine - but if they ask for help I wont say "no"

My mom tutored me for a long time since she didn't want to pay for an outside tutor! I don't remember them helping me w/ specific homework though.

They helped when we asked for help, but mostly we did everything on our own!

They were always willing to help when I asked. My dad took me to the lab at his job to do my science fair project.

Oh my gosh yes. My parents were all over homework. My dad especially would sit with me and do it to make sure the answers were correct. My mom usually showed up during test time to quiz me. Science Fair projects were household projects.

Not really. I guess with math somewhat in elementary school, but I was sort of advanced in math by the time I was in 5th grade and it wasn't stuff my parents knew at that point. I remember they helped me build a volcano in 4th grade. But other than that I think I was on my own. I will always be available if my kid(s) have questions, and I'll especially help with process-type stuff (like how I research and organize papers). But I don't want to fall into the trap of "us" doing THEIR homework every night. Kids need to be self sufficient.

They helped the way a tutor helps, reviewing the lesson and making sure I understood so I could complete the assignments myself.
Now I have friends who do their kids' homework for them - which I think might be what you were implying by the "help" you're hearing about. Whenever they tell me this, it really bothers me!

Dad "helped" me with physics in 11th and 12th grade when I was struggling to understand. He's a total nerd engineer so his explanations were waaay over my head.
Other than that, no. My parents were very against the kind of over-involvement (ie. doing homework for their kids) that a lot of other parents went in for. I really appreciate it and I'll have the same approach with my LO. I see the end result teaching college students and its not pretty.

Yup my parents would help read over my essays and give me critiques. My dad would also help me with my math homework.
Oh and both parents helped me with my Chinese school homework. That was torture!
They stopped when I got to high school.

No, not really. My mom or dad would take me to the store to purchase supplies for my projects, but helped me very little. And I remember my dad quizzing me and helping me make up mnemonics to memorize the periodical table, or spelling bee stuff. But they never did it for me.

Yup! But my dad was more of a guide than actually doing my homework. If he saw that I was really struggling with something, he'd make more example problems for me to work on. This went up until college (hello T charts).

They helped a little, like with gathering supplies for projects or if I didn't understand something. But they never actually helped me DO the project.
I remember doing some crazy projects in MS and High School in the garage, involving spray paint, hammers and nails, with nary a parent around. And I got an A!

Nope, they helped me get supplies, etc. But, never helped or took over. I didn't want the help (very very independent) and it was often hard for them with the language barrier.

Occasionally, however I was on my own most of the time. I remember my older sister helping me with algebra and doing horrible on that assignment

My dad would help with math problems and if needed an idea they might help brainstorm but never helped with execution.
