Maybe not as elegant as an official tree, but functional and a lot cheaper - we went with separate benches and coat hooks so we could adjust the height to what we need. If you match wood tones they look like they belong together.

though I probably would go with a different color cushion than white for a mud room

We also have separate everything: bench and hooks and a cubbie (just a 4 cube shelf, 2 high, with baskets on the top and shoes on the bottom). I like that it was all cheap (shelf and bench were hand me downs) and I can rework it as they get older.

Definitely get heavy duty hooks and anchor them well in the wall. Our kids pulled them both out at least once but now with good long anchored screws they can hold a full backpack.

We also have hooks and a bench with a shoe rack built in the bottom. That system works very well for us!

@ilovepie: That's a good point about heavy duty hooks. We're still daycare age so our backpacks just have spare clothes in them. I'm sure the hooks I have wouldn't hold up to bags full of books!
