E is going to be a dinosaur since she likes to roar so much, I have to actually make the thing before I can post any pictures. I own skeleton earrings that I wear but no real costume. As for decorating we keep it pretty minimal for halloween and usually I go for more fall type stuff.

We got very lucky - my older son wanted to be a “black dragon”, and my younger son wants to be whatever his big brother wants to be. I was browsing Home Sense and I found two costumes in their sizes for $30 each. They’re going to cook when they’re inside at school/daycare but they’ll be perfect for trick or treating. (Please ignore the wall of boxes behind them, we were about to move)

DS’s was fairly easy. I bought the flight suit and made some alterations and added patches. DD’s I had to make because I didn’t love what I could purchase in her size.

@erinbaderin: These are cool!!! I'll bet they'll be big hits
@Milk Tea: aw, love both of them!
@snarkybiochemist: can't wait to see the final product. I do fall décor starting in Sept and then mid oct I switch to scary Halloween stuff. I am not a huge Halloween fan myself but my KIDS love the spooky stuff! Especially my 5yo DD. She lovessssss that we have a grave yard on our lawn

I was hoping DS (3) would want to wear his firefighter costume from last year, but now he wants to be a "builder." Fortunately, we have everything except a tool belt for his tools. I put his Godparents on that task for his b-day!
Last year, I wore a black and white polka dot sweater, black pants and made some ears out of scrap fabric to be a dalmatian. I can't think of anything in my closet that could go with "builder" - too bad those overalls from high school are long gone!
Last night a bday package arrived along with a cat costume that my MIL made for her nephew and was later worn by my husband...40 years ago! It's adorable and really well made (lined and everything) with a furry black body, white paws and white ears on a little bonnet-style hat.. I asked if I could wash it...her response was "I don't know, it's never been washed!" LOL
I mean, I guess our Halloween costumes were like that back in the day (I never wore mine for casual dress-up, it was Halloween and that was it) but I'm definitely putting that thing in a gentle cycle before I try to get DS to try it on! Thankfully, it's too hot to wear for trick-or-treating in Texas
Has anyone tried to get their kiddo to wear one of their old costumes? My mom made me a paddington bear coat when I was 2, but DS wasn't a fan. I still have it though...

@erinbaderin: Adorable! What a great find
@Milk Tea: These are so cute! great job!

DD1 is a superhero (Wonderwoman) and DD2 is a fairy. I’m a witch every year!
DD1s bday is on Halloween and this year we’re tryong to make a haunted house in the basement for her party. The catch is we’re not creative and I have a 2 day conference immoderately prior so have like no time to prepare.
We have limited decor mostly because of budget. I’d let the kids pick whatever they wanted since it’s DDs bday and have promised to get an ugly inflatable something in a few years!

@Ajsmommy: I am a lazy decorator so fall for 3 months does fine by me. As E gets older and she wants to help or thinks we need more scary stuff then I'll follow her lead.
@BUNBUN: my mom swears she had the egg costume I wore at 2 and she would love E to wear it, but she has yet to find the costume so I doubt it will happen.

DD has finally decided on a costume. She picked Anna from frozen. We bought the dress but I am making a fleece cape/cloak. Hoping it will help keep her warm!
I am pretty much always a cat. DH doesn’t usually dress up.
We don’t really decorate for Halloween. We end up with a few pumpkins outside. And I have a Halloween garland I made a few years ago on our mantle, but that’s it.

I picked out a couple costumes (online) I thought DD would like, and she chose a Rainbow Fairy costume from Spirit Halloween. We just got it yesterday and she was very upset she couldn't wear it today I'm happy with the quality of it though, its actual fabric lol

I got my boys Woody and Buzz Lightyear jammies from the Disney store to wear for Halloween pics this week. A group of photographers in our area do a Halloween costume photo food drive every year. My five year old may come up with other ideas between now and Halloween as far as what to wear for trick or treating.

@snarkybiochemist: ha same here! LO will be a dinosaur because she loves roaring like one. Though it’s unclear if she’ll actually tolerate a costume! DH and I don’t dress up. And we live in an apartment so no decorating.

@JJ2626: I'm using a sweatshirt to make it and just having her wear regular pants. Since she is only 2 I'm not going to worry about shoe covers or gloves or a mask. I will use the hood of the sweatshirt for the dino head and if she doesn't keep it up eh whatever. I figure my best bet to keeping a costume on her is to make it almost like clothes

I'm so excited for the kid's costumes this year!
DS wanted to be a wolf, so we're going with Little Red and the Big Bad wolf.
I bought a wolf costume that ended up being too small so cut it apart and did some revising with a pair of jeans and a red/black fleece jacket. The arms from the costume made perfect shoe covers, just have to get DS to try it all on together.
My mom made DD the red cape (for 50 cents!) and I have red corduroy bibs that I wore as a kid that match perfect! A white shirt and her basket from last year's Dorothy costume complete it.
I'm hoping to get the kids outside to do a pre-halloween photo shoot with it all.

@BUNBUN: DS wears an old batman cape we had as kids, and I've been lucky getting both DD and DS to wear some of my old clothes. My mom has some super cute flapper girl dresses she made for my sisters and I that I hope to get DD in some day.

@BUNBUN: My mom replicated a costume (Thomas the train) that she'd made for my brother 30 years ago for LO this year, but in a smaller size since my brother was older when he wore it. So not quite reused, but we will definitely have to do a who wore it better contest with some old pics as it looks exactly the same
My mom gets a huge kick out of making a Halloween costume for LO, so I just let her choose whatever she wants. He's not old enough to care at this point, it's one less thing for me to think about, and it makes her happy...so win, win, win.

@jhd: @snarkybiochemist: PJs/real clothes for the win! I love building costumes that way (admittedly, not always possible)!
nectarine / 2180 posts
@BUNBUN: I will be milking the clothes/pjs route for as long as E will wear that type of costume and they are in my crafting wheelhouse.

Me: Queen
DH: Knight (maybe King)
DD (2.5): Princess
Family wagon: Homemade castle with turrets
...suddenly realizing I have a lot of work to do in the next 2 weeks.

DS 1(4) wanted to be Batman so DS2 (1.5) is Robin and DS3 (4 months) will be the riddler. Basically he’ll have a green onesie with question marks on it. We do decorate outside and set up a little graveyard. We haven’t yet and DS has been bugging me about it so hopefully we’ll have time this weekend.
ETA: not sure why the photo is sideways 🤷♀️

@Ajsmommy:
DD1 is going to be a mermaid. DD2 is going to be a kitty cat. Usually I'm a witch, but this year I'll be 29w pregnant so I'm wearing a bright orange shirt with a jack o'lantern face on the stomach (Target maternity!).
We do a few costume events before halloween-- DD1 will wear her witch costume from last year and I guess I'll have to figure out something quick for DD2 (she's almost 2 so she won't care about wearing an actual costume). This year I also grabbed a couple of Halloween themed outfits from Target for fun.
As far as decor, DD1 prefers "kinda spooky" over outright scary, so we just have a bunch of pumpkins, some cute haunted house luminaries, and a fireplace banner that says "Happy Fall". We are in an apartment but hope to be in a house next year-- if so, DH has already given me permission to go all out.

DD1 Asked to be a Fire Dragon so I purchased some yellow leggings and a yellow long-sleeve shirt from Old Navy as the costume base and will be crafting it up to create her wings/scales/horned headband to round it out.
DD2 will be a pumpkin because she is a baby and we got a pumpkin onesie for free from a friend
I will probably be a witch of some sort (again) because I don't want to put any effort into a costume. DH will probably be a viking (again) because we already have the horns and it's his go-to, pairing his helmet with jeans and one of his many black metal t-shirts.
The weather here tends to be fairly warm with the worst mosquito swarms of the season so we dress for comfort and protection while we stroll the neighborhood with friends.

@lindseykaye: Oh man, you have a dragon and a viking - get the baby a sheep costume, give yourself a side braid and a metal-looking headband, and you've got a How to Train Your Dragon family costume going!

@erinbaderin: OH MAN. How did I miss this. Thank you for this amazing idea.. I think I'm going to run with it!

So I couldn't resist this I found for DS for $2.50.. but he will only leave it on for like 2 seconds.. so I doubt he'll wear it trick or treating.
The pic of DS and DD show the costume DD picked out, a princess fairy (she left the wings off for the pumpkin patch) and DS is wearing his mummy jammies he also wore last year and will most likely wear again unless i can somehow convince him to wear the duck dynasty beard!!! and the last two are our "spooky graveyard" house decorations

Super big-time proud of how this dragon costume turned out. Best homemade costume from me yet - and DD is really REALLY in love with it.
Brought to you by felt, fleece, Old Navy top/leggings, a headband base, and lots of hot glue lol
