My neighborhood had a Halloween party yesterday, and they had a costume contest with different age groups. There was a 1st place and a 2nd place winner from each age group, and the prizes were Target gift cards (nothing extreme, just $10 and $5). The kids who didn't win didn't receive anything, but there was free food and drinks for everyone at the party.

One of my kids won a prize and the other didn't, but my father-in-law made a comment that in today's society lots of parents might not think a costume contest with winners is acceptable. He thinks that all the parents today believe every child should receive a prize. I told him I didn't have a problem with how the costume contest was set up, but it got me thinking that maybe he is right that other parents and kids wouldn't like the idea of only two children in each group getting a prize. What do you all think?
