I am taking my one year old on an airplane for the first time and was wondering if anyone has actually used their carseat on the plane. I saw that this is the recommendation, but A) I don't think I've ever seen anyone do this and B) I can't imagine our seat would fit anyways. What does everyone think?

Yeah, multiple times. I bought a narrow seat specifically, the Cosco Scenera.

yes, we did. we have a britax marathon. i couldn't exactly figure out how the seatbelt worked on it though and the flight attendant was also confused.

I have every time we have flown with LO (lost count, it's probably around 12 times by now). We use the Combi Coccoro.

Yeah we used ours last year when DD was about a year. I think you either have to use a car seat or use a CARES harness for your kid on the plane.

Never. We have flown with our son at least a dozen times and it's always been in our lap. He has his own seat for an upcoming flight and we had to buy him a seat since he's now 2. When I asked my husband if we should bring his car seat on board he laughed in my face.

Yep, on the way to and from Florida two months ago.
It wasn't a big hassle, and LO seemed very happy to be in a familiar car seat. As for fitting, you have to look on your seat to make sure it's FAA approved, and then you can take a look at the measurements of your seat + the plane's seats and see if you think it'll fit. We pulled up the arm rests and ours fit fine.

We've taken our car seat. It worked fine. We needed it for our trip anyway and we were more comfortable having it with us than checking it.

Thanks, everyone! I thought I would seem crazy if I brought one, since I hadn't seen it before, but I must have just not been paying attention. I definitely think it will be easier to keep my squirmy guy happy, plus it will be a safe place to put him down if I need to use two hands for something - that does happen occasionally, right?

We have had times where we used it and times where we didn't. In the end, LO did fine in the regular seat so we learned going to forward just to gate check the seat because it was just easier for us.

Yup and it is the best. I ALWAYS bring it on when I can. It fits great, and my son is always happier in it than on my lap.

We used ours when we flew with our baby. He was only six weeks. It was really nice to have the seat for him to sleep in, and when we held him we could pile a bunch of stuff in the car seat.

We bought the Cosco Scenera for our trips last year and it worked great. It is lightweight and perfect for planes. And cheap. Our son loved it on the planes.

We haven't had occasion to yet (and none of our friends have used a car seat on the plane), but the next time we fly, we will be using our car seat for safety reasons.

With the exception of her being a young baby, she wouldn't ever sit quietly in the seat. So, it sat in the seat next to me if there was space available but never really used it.

We flew with our bucket infant seat when my LO was 9 months old (2hr flight). I only brought it on the plane because they told me at check in that it was a really empty flight, so I knew we would have an extra seat. It was great because he fell asleep in it pretty easily.
At 13 months I wouldn't plan to bring our convertible car seat, but my LO rarely will fall asleep in his seat anymore, so it just wouldn't be that helpful for us.

Yes. When DS was 3 months old I flew with him alone. I was going to gate-check the car seat and carry him on my lap but they told me there were enough seats open on the plane for him to have his own seat if I strapped the car seat in. It was nice I guess but I ended up holding him the entire time anyways.

yes! Its much easier when he has a seat to sit in. he often falls asleep. We also bought a $40 cosco scenera just for flying so if we do have to check it it doesnt get damages.

We have only once or twice and my son has flown over a dozen times.

We brought ours on when he was an infant.
It worked great on the international flights we had him in the airline provided bassinets for most of the flight though.If you bring your seat make sure your seat is FAA approved before bringing it onboard though.
He has now also flown as a lap child a couple of times. For us both things work.

We have and will continue to do so for future flights for reasons of both safety and comfort.

Thanks again, everyone, for all the feedback! I think we will bring it with us, both for safety and to have a comfortable place for him to sit. I can't decide if we should buy the cheap Cosco one or take our Britax. We will have 3 seats in a row, so even if the Britax is a little wide, we can always put the arm rests up and not be bothering anyone else.

@Chuckles: I would buy the cheap Costco one. It is lightweight, so easier to lug around and also you don't have to worry about anything happening to it. Plus it is smaller so fits better generally on the plane!

We flew when LO was 5 months and I never knew I could. I've never noticed them on planes before so it didn't cross my mind. I think I will next time we fly
