I'm freaking out a bit. My manager is trying to get me fired...HR knows I'm KU but my job is still on the line. I'm paranoid I won't find work in order to get my hours needed for maternity leave.

I have not had this happen, but I really hope it doesn't happen to you. I'm so sorry you are in this situation.

@miramira: yes and no. if they have just cause they can - slowly I've realized that HR in my company is there to protect managers, not staff, so it doesn't matter what I do, if they want me gone they will find a way.

I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this. Is being pregnant a "just cause" or are they scrambling to come up with some BS justification?
pomegranate / 3105 posts
@miramira: The latter for sure. It's been ongoing issues for a while and I don't know what to think anymore.

Document everything you can. Especially differences before and after pregnancy. There was a huge change in tune once I said I was pregnant and i knew I didn't want any part of that environment after baby so I left. But the next woman they hired found out she was pregnant a month after she started working for them. Since she was on a visa she couldn't easily quit so they fired her for a bunch of BS reasons. It eventually got somewhat resolved but I always feel guilty I knowingly let other women walk into that situation. If you can I'd try and find if any other women quit or were fired while pregnant so you can show a pattern.

@Maysprout: This!
@babycanuck: Protect yourself and document EVERYTHING! Should you get fired while pregnant, I'd lawyer up with a great employment lawyer.
pomegranate / 3105 posts
I would quit if I didn't need the hours and the income. I'm so miserable.

OMG Seriously, haven't you been through enough and now this..yes, document everything! keep us updated..

Definitely document everything, and if it happens, apply for unemployment immediately. So sorry this is happening to you

@babycanuck: I agree with the other ladies, make sure you are documenting everything, meeting times, comments, emails, etc. Also please make sure you contact the ON Employment Standards Centre and speak with someone there about what you need to know/can do

Yes, I was part of a 6 person lay off while pregnant. I'm sure my pregnancy played into why I was chosen since i was the first to be pregnant in probably 8 years? So that would mean more $$$ for them.

@babycanuck: I'm so sorry! HR at my company is similar. I really hope you can get your hours in (or find something awesome to get the remaining hours in).

No experience, but I hope everything works out.
Where I live it is illegal to fire a pregnant woman.
grapefruit / 4110 posts
I wasn't fired but he tried. Look into the anti discrimination laws ( I did a lot of reading). Pretense is illegal too. Go to eeo ( this isn't always hr) and make the complaint (after reading and understanding). Or since there is a law you may want to consult with a lawyer. It sucks so good luck. Also start looking for new jobs because you don't want to be there long term.

Alright ladies. I've dealt with HR, with a corrective action notice (with honestly some unreasonable items, but whatever. it's HR, why bother arguing.)
Now a WWYD question:
- Six months out from mat leave
- You have an opportunity to take a 6 month contract elsewhere
OR
- You stay where you are, waking up every day wondering "did I do anything to upset my manager and today is the day she fires me since she can at any time?"
I'm in a high stress environment to begin with and the thought of option 2 is eating away at me. I am also going to speak to my RE about short term disability so I have some time to get my health back.
pear / 1881 posts
@babycanuck: If you stay on, would you get any sort of paid maternity leave? If not, I'm not so sure that it is worth it. Why put yourself (and your baby) through that stress? It's not good to work in a toxic environment, even if you do want to stick it to them..what a sucky situation!
pomegranate / 3105 posts
@NorthStar: It doesn't matter where I go to work as long as I get 600 working hours within the last 52 weeks. I already have that, and I would quit if I didn't need the income before mat leave. I would likely work no matter where I am until end of Sept and then be off on mat leave.
A friend of mine said change your point of view - HR gave you a second chance, but I personally feel like the stress of that thought all day every day of "did I do something wrong" is worse.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@babycanuck: I tend to take the long view, so I would be thinking about what I'd want to do after my maternity leave...if you take the 6 month contract, what are your options post leave?
pomegranate / 3105 posts
@looch: I had already decided I wasn't going back to this company after mat leave. I have been too unhappy for too long, I'm smart and will be able to find a job elsewhere, would start looking about 7-8 months into mat leave.
honeydew / 7303 posts
@babycanuck: i'ddefinitely take option 1.get out of that stressful environment!
pear / 1881 posts
@babycanuck: I agree with Looch. If you are going to leave anyway, why even bother staying, especially, if you have the option of the 6 month contract work.
pomegranate / 3105 posts
@looch: @NorthStar: @yellowbird: Thanks everyone. I've really been struggling with this - I can't talk to DH because he has never worked in a corporate office environment and thinks if your boss makes it difficult for you to do work, then just sit there and get paid for doing nothing. If only!
I am going to pursue the contract this week and hopefully something comes of it. I'm sure I'll be able to sell my skills to get it.
bananas / 9229 posts
I feel like option 1 is a no brainer. Why would you NOT take it? What's making you consider staying?
pomegranate / 3105 posts
@LindsayInNY: honestly having to explain the whole situation to DH. i'm dreading it but if I get this new position then it's all about staying healthy and calm during this pregnancy with no stress.
bananas / 9229 posts
@babycanuck: Eh, I've sorta been there. He may not be able to understand or relate but I'm sure he'll be supportive. At the end of the day, I think a less stressful environment will be best while pregnant. And I say that as someone who went from stress or stress-less a year ago
pomegranate / 3105 posts
@LindsayInNY: the position is going backwards for what I've done so far, but you know what? i don't care. I just want to be happy.
grapefruit / 4089 posts
@babycanuck: You need to do whatever you can to keep your sanity right now! I'd take the contract and get the hell out of dodge... your current boss sounds like a total A-hole. Sorry you've been under so much stress!

@babycanuck: Do you have any vacation or sick time saved up by any chance?
pomegranate / 3105 posts
@prettylizy: I do, and I've considering using it all, but if I leave and I use what I haven't accrued then I would have to pay it back
persimmon / 1179 posts
Wow, how stressful!! I would take the 6 month contract because I couldn't live with the stress for the next 6 months. Plus, what if during that time they find a way to get rid of you for no reason? I think the nature of HR is changing, my workplace is out to protect and benefit the managers and the organization rather than any employees too.
watermelon / 14467 posts
@babycanuck: I would take the contract and get out of that stressful environment. I was in a similar situation while pregnant and wasn't able to get out (I'm still there, too, because I haven't found another job) because I needed to be able to take maternity leave and job-protected leave isn't on the table if you've worked anywhere for less than 12 months here.
pomegranate / 3105 posts
@getjazzy: this whole ordeal has taught me that about HR - they don't give a damn about the employees.
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
@babycanuck: yikes!! And it's not like you can call HR and be like "Hey guys, how much time can I take off before I mic drop you all?"
