Do you want to go?
My parents go at least once a year for missions..
I wanted to go before I had kids, but that never happened.
Maybe one day we'll take the kids with us..

@hilsy85: wow! Where?! I wanna see pics!!!
@chopsuey119: I want to go!! But not as a "do-gooder" lol! I REALLY want to do a luxury safari tour! They have head amazing treetop camping - "glamping"! Who am I kidding, I'd be happy to just go on a cheap safari and stay in a hut too! Definitely want to do Eygpt too - hopefully someday when the turmoil dies down.

@chopsuey119: My parents go to SA & Lesotho. They love it. I think they're planning a trip to another part of Africa, but I'm not sure which. What do they do in Ghana?
@coacheswife123: I have a friend from college who lived in Uganda for a year working with a mission that rescued abandoned, unwanted, or parentless kids from the slums (It's called Dwelling Places). She fell hard for the country & her pictures are gorgeous. I'd love to go!

I would really like to go. My stepmom has been on a safari in Kenya. I have many students from Africa...mainly Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Tanzania.

@shopaholic: we went to South Africa, Zambia, and Mozambique. We looked at that treetop place actually! Bit ended up staying elsewhere. And oh my goodness I have a million pics but don't want to thread jack...maybe if someone starts a honeymoon/travel thread

@hilsy85: I think it deserves a gold post thread of it's own! ;). DH had a dream about Mozambique once and ever since then I said that means we HAVE to go there someday!
@matador84: that's so interesting! Do you have a lot of students from there because of some geographical reason? It just sounds so exotic!

I was supposed to go on a two-week trip to South Africa but got pregnant with LO instead and had to cancel I hope to return at some point!

@shopaholic: nearly all of them are refuguees. i live in a suburban area of texas that operates as a level II refugee center and works strongly with catholic family services. we have a lot of beef packing plants here and they give the refugees work so we have a lot of them.
the stories they tell are amazing...and unbelievable.

@matador84: wow! That is so interesting and sounds like an inspiring place to work!

@shopaholic: i promise there is no place like it. we also have many refugees from camps in southeast asia...mainly thailand and burma.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@matador84: We are a large resettlement site too. Lots of Burmese, Ethiopian and Somali families.

@Mrs. Jacks: interesting! we used to have a ton of somailis, but now i would be safe to say there are more burmese and karen (a thai ethnicity) and overall less africans.
it is really crazy when kids see each other and they knew each other back at the refugee camp in their country!

@matador84: it is so hard sometimes to get a Karin interpreter... And then you do, only to find out that the family speaks Kareni and not Karin. Ah, the joys!
papaya / 10560 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: ah that cracks me up! i can't believe someone outside my little bubble knows the difference between karen and karenni. we have to use our students as interpreters often in special situations and they are AMAZING!

Yes, I am OBSESSED with Africa! I've only done safari in Kenya but I am dying to go back! The Masai Mara was the most amazing place and don't even get me started on how wonderful the people are. We are definitely going to take LO to Africa at some stage...hopefully in the next few years!

I've been to Morocco...it's not what most people think of as stereotypical Africa but while I was there it hit me that I was in Africa!
pomegranate / 3595 posts
I lived and worked there for two years after college. I do hope to get back there when we can take the time to have a really good trip.
@matador84: @Mrs. Jacks: I worked in refugee resettlement right after i came back and we had a ton of somali bantu then. it is such a cool opportunity to get to know so many different cultures!
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@matador84: We once had a Karin family in the hospital that had no contacts (on a weekend), it took us an extra day in the hospital to identify what language they spoke and obtain the phone interpreter. I've worked really hard to be able to try and hear the differences between the two, so that won't happen again!

Yes, I spent a summer living in Morocco.
@spaniellove: Hey! What brought you to Morocco?

@DigAPony: We spent a few days in Marrakech last year. Staying in the medina was such a great experience! I loved learning how to really pay attention to where I was so I didn't get lost - we use GPS so much here that we never care.

I've been to South Africa, Zambia and Botswana. I'd go back in a heartbeat! I've already been talking to my husband about how we should take our son on safari when he's 8+ and he's not even born yet : ) Can't wait to go back!

Just once, to Egypt. We couldn't work out the timing for a Kenyan safari, but when DS gets older, it is for sure on our list.
