I was outside of a restaurant near closing time and I used my sweater as a cover!

WIth my first i was so self conscience that I would lock myself in a bathroom stall to breastfeed. I promised myself I wouldn't do that with my second. I breastfeed anywhere (with a cover) even in a restaurant while eating. hehe.

Oh sure. Last time was in the library with a cover. That was probably 4-5 months ago, though, since we're down to 2-3x a day at 13 months. I also BF'd on a plane w/o a cover, since it would have been more of a pain there.

All the time. I mostly use a cover or a blanket. I have at restaurants, at the beach, in the car outside of a store, and in a church at a funeral service. She's gotta eat, so I am fine doing it wherever. I prefer using a cover over a blanket though!

The first time I nursed in public was at a McDonalds. I was stuck in awful traffic in the pouring rain and LO was screaming. The first place we could pull of was McDonalds, so that was that. It wasn't an ideal first public BF, but it ended up making me a lot more confident about BFing in public. I figured if I could do it there, I could do it pretty much anywhere I did use a cover, and still always do. Now, I'll BF anywhere she's hungry.

I have at the beach, church and once in a restaurant. I always use my hooter hider!

I have only breastfed at parks so far. I might have to bf tomorrow at a restaurant. I use a cover. I'm kind of scared because the first time I did it a woman gave me a dirty look and changed benches even though I was using a cover.

Let's see... in a Red Robin (with a cover), in a Mexican restaurant (with a cover), in a Burger King (no cover--it was an emergency. We were on a road trip and baby girl was STARVING)...there have probably been more but I can't remember.
I wish I was more "free" about NIP (nurse in public) without a cover, but I am just too modest. I admire the women who just whip it out, honestly. I saw a women at dinner last night nursing her newborn without a cover and she just seemed so non-chalant about the whole thing. I thought she looked so cool!

pretty much every single weekend. these days i don't use a cover because we've been going to playground that's deserted, so i go to a bench in the corner. it's too hot for a cover anyway.

THe zoo, twice--with a cover.
The beach at a mostly-empty park --without a cover.
The beach near my house, while sitting with neighbours--with a cover.
In the back seat of my car, in public parking lots ALL THE TIME--with and without a cover.
Hey all, by the way, there is a day next week called breastfeed in public day August 15th!!!!!
cantaloupe / 6146 posts
At the mall I use a cover. I try to avoid nursing in the car since parking lots are supposed to be dangerous for women--but when I do, I use a cover. When I am outdoors and it is not SUPER crowded, I do not use a cover, but a use a mini burp cloth to slightly hide the top-boob. In restaurants, either the cover or the mini burp cloth...Synagogue with a cover. In those nursing rooms in malls--no cover.

All the time. LO is seven weeks old and I have no qualms about feeding anywhere, anytime. I use my udder cover or a muslin blanket but absolutely refuse to excuse myself from a situation to breastfeed. Yesterday I fed LO on a bench on a crowded street, the day before, I met DH for lunch in the city and fed LO at the table amongst the business lunch crowd. I will continue feeding her anywhere, anytime. Fortunately, breastfeeding in public is widely accepted here, but I will continue doing the same when I head to the States for a visit.

All the time and rarely with a cover anymore. I'm more apt to use a cover down South than in the North East. No one bats an eyelash in the NE, but in the S I feel a little more self conscious.
pomegranate / 3983 posts
Pretty much everywhere- benches, restaurants, airplanes, at the beach etc. I used to use a cover until maybe 9 months, but then LO just got too big and I just couldn't deal with him fighting it anymore, so now I just go into a corner if I have to.

In my car with a cover the first few times. Yesterday at a park w an A&A blanket tied around me. I'm trying to be more adventurous so I'm not stuck at home all the time.

Oh, ALL the time..
Buffalo wild wings, at a park, the beach, multiple restaurants, the grocery store (if I can find a place to sit, otherwise I go to my car), changing rooms in stores, in the airport, on the airplane... usually all with a cover.

All the time!! We've nursed in (always with a cover) restaurants, cars, the mall, airport, etc, etc. I used to be self-conscious about it in the beginning, but am totally fine with it now. I haven't really gotten any stares or comments yet. I try to be really discreet though and move into a corner if I can.

all. the. time. with and without a cover. so many local restaurants, mcdonald's, dunkin donuts, nordstrom's ladies lounge, the beach, the waiting room at the obgyn office, in the car in the home depot parking lot. i also nurse him while walking around wearing him in the ergo with the sleeping hood up. i've done this at outdoor festivals, on hikes, etc.

Did so all the time, mostly without a cover because DD HATED them and would pull them off.

Everywhere, with a cover almost always. Museums, restaurants, the Mall in DC, weddings, airplanes, shopping, the beach, something strongly resembling a bar.... Once you get the hang of it, it's no big deal. I wouldn't like to have to be at home every time I had to feel him! I'd never have gone anywhere!

So far I've only BF at parks with a cover on. I haven't had the opportunity to BF at a restaurant but if I had to, I probably wouldn't mind.
Do you feel awkward of you are surrounded by close family and friends? For some odd reason, I have no qualms BFing in public if I was surrounded by strangers but I feel awkward if it was close family and friends. For one, my brother is really irked by BFing so I don't do it if he's in the room. I have a birthday dinner coming up for a close friend and it will be around the time LO will eat. I wish I could just nurse since that's what I want to do, but I'm in a crowd that believes bottles are the way to go. WWYD?

I have not been able to summon the courage to do this yet. I am so angry at myself that I let other people make me too uncomfortable to breast feed in public.
ETA: I do breastfeed in the car, but I dont consider that to be in public since people can hardly see me

All the time! I use a cover unless I'm in the car, because I don't want other people to feel awkward. Otherwise I would be free and loose!
kiwi / 658 posts
it was mostly in the car without a cover. windows are tinted so nobody could really see inside.
persimmon / 1135 posts
I do it all the time: at restaurants, coffee shops, the neighborhood children's centres, etc
I don't own a cover. I'll sometimes use a scarf to cover up a bit, but usually I don't need it to feel like I'm being modest. In fact, I nursed at a restaurant at lunch today and a woman at the next table smiled at us a few times. A while later, she looked at me and said "Oh! I didn't realize... I thought you were just holding him!"

All the time! No cover, I just pull up my shirt and unhook the nursing bra; shirt covers most of the boob, and the bug covers my belly! I'm in Austin TX, and no seems to even notice, regardless of where we are or how awkward I am at getting my giant boobs back into the bra.

@LITTLEVEESMOMMY: I know what you mean about feeling more uncomfortable around friends & family. Sometimes if I'm with male relatives or friends who don't seem comfortable (or if I feel awkward about it), I'll go into another room to nurse. Maybe you can do that?
hostess / papaya / 10540 posts
Other than my car, the only place was on an airplane when LO was 14 months old and I used a blanket to cover.
persimmon / 1472 posts
@MungBean: I guess it's more awkward since we know them? I'm never afraid if what strangers think so maybe that's why I can BF in front in them. I'll try excusing myself next time and then maybe I can work up to actually BFing in the same room. It's getting easier so that will probably help too.

I find myself nursing in the car a lot. I have my husband pull over and I just stretch out in the back seat, no cover. I have a HooterHider, but my daughter hates it. Nothing can be remotely touching her head while she's eating. I hate nursing her in public restrooms, it's gross but I just don't feel comfortable nursing without a cover. My mom used to leave the room when I needed to nurse at her house but now she doesn't care I just whip it out lol.

a lot. I nursed in a restaurant today at lunch. No cover, I do the pull up the shirt pull down the tank top routine. Still discreet and less hassle.
coconut / 8234 posts
I got to nurse at two great tourist attractions this weekend: the Central Park Zoo and a bench right outside of the Museum of Natural History. And both times LO was super distracted because of all the people and sights so it took a long time and we had a couple of curious gawks.
I had a cover in the diaper bag but it was way too hot for that so I just did the two-shirt pull up/pull down. I find that the cover usually draws more attention.

Still pregnant, but I plan to nurse in public as much as I need to. I get so frustrated when I hear about women being harassed or given dirty looks, so I'm considering it a protest. I figure the more we nurse in public, the more people will get used to it.
