I'm switching OBGYNs and have narrowed it down to two. They both fit what I'm looking for, and I can't decide. Have you ever booked a consultation appointment to get a feel for a doctor/practice? Can I even do that?

We did when we were looking for a pediatrician. I'd be surprised if they wouldn't allow it.

@grizz: I would check with your insurance and also ask the practice if there is a consultation fee. With my first pregnancy, I had a consultation with a prospective OB so that I could ask all my questions about their approach, stance on c sections, episiotomies, etc. But my insurance wouldn't cover it because it wasn't part of a prenatal exam, so i had to pay $350 out of pocket (this was in Manhattan). Better to schedule a prenatal visit, ask all your questions during and after. You should be able to switch OBs again if you don't like the practice.

Yes. I did that with my previous OB and our pediatrician. Turns out they were the only ones I needed, because I loved them.

@Myicitygirl: Those are the questions I have too. I'm not exactly down for another surprise 3rd degree episiotomy that I have to go to physical therapy for!

@grizz: some practices provide that kind of information on their websites. Or you can call and ask the receptionist if any doctors will respond to such questions by phone or email, or if someone else (maybe an office manager) can provide an answer or some actual numbers.

I did schedule some consultations with doctors when I was switching OB's between kid #1 and #2. I think they paid for it because my son was premature and I was 'high risk'. But it confused the CRAP out of the doctors.... they kept asking if I wanted birth control or a pap or what I was there for. I was like.. whoa there nelly. I just want to talk. haha! The one doctor that 'got it' was the one that I picked!

No, but I just switched obgyns at 28 weeks and no one batted an eye, so you can always try one out and switch if it isn't working.

Yes!! Not with an OB but with my MFM doctor, my g/p and my nephrologists. They were totally cool with answering all my questions and getting to know my medical history.

We are very, very, very tentatively discussing the possibility of a #2, and I want to make sure I'm in good hands if we decide to go ahead with it. I can't imagine delivering with the OB who delivered DS.

We did for pediatricians, never have for OBs, but I also hated my OB that I saw throughout my pregnancy with DS. I see his partner now, who delivered DS.
And EEEEEK!! @grizz:

I have done consults with OBs before picking the right person. With everything you went through, I would be doing the same!

@grizz: Oh yeah, absolutely. I consulted with 3 different options before landing on my current OB/nurse midwife combined practice. I also had a horrendous delivery with my first -- and a large part of the problem was due to my provider's judgment.
I'm loving my new provider and especially love how she sat down with me at our consult and asked ME questions about my previous experience and didn't just leave it up to me. I felt like she really wanted to be on the same page and understand what happened as clearly as she could. Other providers I interviewed didn't click in the same way with me. I think a consult, in your situation, would be well worth it.

Yup! They're usually called meet and greets, but not every provider will do them. I schedule for a clinic and it really is each individual providers choice. I wanted to do one for my son's doctor, but she didn't do them so we had to schedule it as a well child check and do it that way- so it was billed as such.
