I went once years ago with my niece's grandparents. It wasn't our tree and I remember ruining my new coat when I sat in tree sap. My mom wasn't too happy about it.
We have always had fake trees and DH had been trying to persuade me into getting a real tree. Well, today my vanpool rider told me that she gets a real tree cut for $15 each! She's going to see if other people can get the same deal.

I had fake trees my whole life too; I mean we lived in Asia so real tree wasn't even a thing and when we moved to the US my parents would never go through the trouble for a live tree!
We did our first real tree last Christmas and we loved it! We are not cutting it ourselves tho; we just picked a pre-cut one and that's good enough for me!

Cutting your own trees is really one of the best things to do (sustainability wise). And it can make for fun memories.
We always did when I was a kid. First, my cousin grew trees in land next to ours. Then years later we went to a local farm. It was really fun and I have fond memories of my dad using me to measure the trees (we'd get one 6 feet tall...which was me with my arm up in the air)
It was dirty and messy but we'd dress for it. I preferred getting the tree to the actual decorating.
I'm really allergic to pine though, so I've been using a fake tree since I've left home. My parents had a formal living room with doors that closed it off from the rest of the house when we weren't using it so my allergies didn't bother me as much as they would now with open floor plan places.

I've done it every year for probably 20 years or so. It is one of my favorite holiday traditions. We took D last year and plan to do it every year with him.

Nope, we didn't really celebrate Christmas growing up. And now with DH he's pretty allergic so we always have to have a fake tree.
I wished we could cut a real tree every year though.

I hope someday maybe DH and I will have a house with a "Christmas Tree room" (what we called the formal living room when we were little...before my parents could afford to furnish it!)

We go up into the mountains to cut out tree at one of the tree farms. It is so much fun. We always make a day out of it with hot chocolate and lunch.
ETA: But never for $15! Our trees always end up costing around $50-60.

@KT326: I couldn't believe my ears when I heard $15. I was going to ask again if she said $15 or $50, but then I did some googling and found that WA state sells permits for $10 and gives us designated areas where we can look for our own Christmas tree and cut it down ourselves! $10 plus gas and hopefully not too much frustration getting back home is a good deal to me. Ask me next week and ask me if the $10 permit and adventure into the woods was worth it. Hehe.

We do every year except this year because "no live (cut) trees in building." We are going to go anyhow and get a wreath from the local farm.

We have always bought a precut tree, but I have always wanted to cut my own down. Unfortunately, the ones I like don't grow in this area, even at tree farms. Maybe one day, but for now, we like our tradition of getting a tree at home depot, leaving it wrapped in twine, and seeing what it looks like when we get home and unwrap it. We've done that every year for 7 years and so far have never had a bad tree!

I've only ever had fake ones so I have never cut my own.
However, I love the smell of real trees and cutting down one would be such a fun Christmas thing to do!

When I was a kid, my dad planted a bunch of pine trees on our property and now every year my siblings and I make a day of going to pick out and cut down our Christmas trees for each of our homes. I love it! I've heard of getting permits from the state to go cut one down too, and that's probably what we would do if we didn't have my dad's mini forest.

That sounds like so much fun! But now....we always just have a fake tree. Since I have 2 dogs at home, I have a feeling my male dog would think a real tree is just any other tree he could pee on!

@bluestriped bee: Wow! That is awesome. Just remember to bring gloves and wear clothes you don't care about. Tree sap is a b*tch to get off!
@MrsBrewer: We have two cats. The first Christmas after we got our second cat he peed on our tree and killed it. Our apartment smelled so bad and it took us awhile to figure out what it was

@MrsBrewer: It was only the first year and he was just a kitten, 6 months old I think? The next two years we ended up getting a certain kind of tree that was really pokey, I think that helped keep him out of it. Now we are back to the normal types and the cats leave it alone.

I did once when we were visiting my DH family that live near a forest. Glad I did it once but it was cold, took a long time to find a tree the right size and it still ended up being a charlie brown kind of tree. I am not a fan of fake trees, but I would rather go to a christmas tree lot than cut down my own. But I am kind of a wuss

I've got you all beat...in my state you can by a permit and cut one down on forest service land for...$5!
I've never done it though. Maybe this year!
