Is your job ending? Like a temp placement? If there's a clear end then I would think that would be acceptable. But if you just want to leave your job, I think it puts them in an awkward position to send something like that. Maybe a phone mention to someone you know well from working with them a lot.

@littlek: I should be more specific. I did a lot of work for a particular client . . . one of my regular contacts for that client mentioned that they were really light on experience with an area that I have a good bit of expertise in. He gave me the contact for his boss, and said I should send my resume in. So that's what I did.

I've never done this but would check into any non-compete policies your current company may have in place. A lot of organizations have clauses in their employee handbooks preventing employees from seeking employment at companies in which their current employer does business.

@MsLipGloss: didn't realize that. I had one of these when I was working in the staffing industry and DH has had these at all of his jobs (IT). My current employer is dealing with a situation where someone left and took their clients with them, so that is also on my mind. Was just suggesting it is better to check then find out afterwards.

I wouldn't send my resume at this point, if you're just feeling out leads/availability/future openings. I've had conversations about new openings, etc. in other groups. I think resumes are at more of a formal job search level.

@septca: Why do you feel as though it would be a waste of anyone's time? Getting the best people in your organization is never a waste of time . . . !

@septca: Yes, yes you should! You can only play the cards you're dealt . . . but there is nothing that says that you can't work to stack that deck in your favor.
