@Mamaof2: yep, and yeah, I almost fainted! at the OOP cost, anyway. we go through banfield and pay a monthly fee for all his shots, well visits, etc to be covered. it was only like 5-10 more a month to include a twice yearly dental cleaning (I think - maybe yearly?) which ended up costing about 1/4 of what it would have cost if we just paid OOP.

did that make any sense?

@Mamaof2: ummm no. lol. i was quoted 400 ish not including any major work (extractions) or pain meds i think. banfield I pay 29/month now (was paying 25) so basically it cost us like $150 ish? he did not have to have any extractions luckily (I think that could've been extra) just some gel stuff on a couple teeth/gum lines because they were really receding and exposing roots. he didnt even need pain meds! he was totally fine

@Mamaof2: oh gosh it was not that much!!! I think it was like $300-400 and it's mainly because of the anesthesia? Her teeth are actually in great condition but we needed a tumor remove and our vet told us about a deal they were running. It was cheaper to get the teeth cleaning which included anesthesia versus just anesthesia.

@Mamaof2: That quote seems really expensive. I paid around $1000 for both dogs, including multiple extractions for both. And that was at a vet I thought was overpriced in general (compared to other vet's we've had). At my previous vet, it was usually about $250 for a teeth cleaning.

Yes-we did the anesthesia cleaning and the quote was super $$$ before the surgery, and only got worse during the surgery when they did x-rays to see why his teeth were missing (he wasn't born with a few teeth, apparently). He then chewed at the spot where the IV went in and ended up back at the vet needing antibiotics and 'the cone of shame' until his paw healed! Long story short, I'm not doing it again. We do anesthesia-free cleaning every few years-they offer them at a lot of different pet groomers/pet stores, and it only costs about $150. I've been told it's not "as good" as the full anesthesia-cleaning, but for the cost (and to not have to put my dog under!), I am happy to do it.

@Mamaof2: Holy cow! $900? Where do you live (if you want to answer this). When we lived in Northern VA it was around $500 something... probably closer to mid-$500s. We're in Asia and it's $50. And, yes, $50 USD! I'm outraged by how much vets charge in the U.S.

@Mamaof2: I would definitely shop around b/c my SIL lives in PA and it's not even that expensive there. Probably around the $400-$500 as well. I actually bought a teeth scraper and did i myself a few times when my dog was younger and what a difference it made. Granted, she struggled and it was a slobbery mess but her breath was much better and it lasted quite a few months. My dog is also 13 (almost 14) and I only give her dry food and treats to prevent her teeth from going bad faster. I think it really helped b/c she still has all of her teeth. Hope you can find a more reasonably priced place.

our dog is also on Banfield's Wellness plan, and has a dental cleaning included once/year. It really has been great. We don't hesitate to bring him in if we're worried about him being sick or something because all visits are included, and most standard treatments for normal things are discounted, like when he was puking for 2 days straight and we were worried about him keeping hydrated, they injected fluids for maybe $15-$20? It was wonderful. We originally signed up for the plan when we first adopted him thinking we'd be worried first-time dog parents and have kept it ever since just because it seems to make things easy, and he is a dog who definitely needs the once-yearly teeth cleaning.

I paid around $420 with my little Lucy - and she had to get 4 teeth extracted! Poor little girl, i have to get my Bambam's teeth done while i'm on maternity as well. Vet bills are crazy!

@alphagam84: link? We have always brushed her teeth since a puppy so she let's us do it. But in her old age plaque is starting to build up!
