No for having them in the lap in a moving vehicle. But I have taken dd out of the car seat while we were waiting to cross the canadian border recently. She had to pee and there was no way we could've pulled over as we were like thr 3rd car from the booth with many cars surrounding us. Luckily, we had some travel potty bags in the car.

I did a few times when we lived in NYC and took a taxi. I only ever did this if a car seat was just not an option. I've also done it in some Asian countries where car seats are rare and not the law (and seatbelts, what's a seatbelt?), but DS was a toddler then.

Only on private property in empty fields, but even that makes me neevous. I'm not saying I wouldn't if it were an emergency.

I probably would if we were travelling somewhere that they weren't required/common. We're going to the Caribbean next week, and bringing the bucket since it attaches to the stroller, but from what I've heard, transportation there might be pretty sketchy in general.

I see this all the time in Hong Kong and just don't get it. Now that my toddler is way too tall for an infant capsule, I use a special taxi harness for her in taxis. I don't love it but it's better than the alternatives (ergo or regular seatbelt).
I guess I understand how some people feel like there's no other choice and just hold their baby in taxis but I get annoyed seeing people do this in private cars, which you see a lot. What takes the cake is when people have a "baby in car" sticker on the windshield of their luxury car, mom gets out decked out in designer everything, pulls out a stokke stroller, and there's no car seat....cash has been poured into everything but protecting their kid - I just don't get it!

I've done it in the US, in a cab in NYC. I've also had him on a bus and train with no restraints, both in the US and abroad.
I am not sure what the point of this post is...to make people look and feel bad? Or what, exactly?

In a cab, on a bus, in another country where i maybe dont have a carseat?

Once in an airport shuttle, it made me super nervous! But there isn't even any way to strap down a carseat in those, so what else are you supposed to do?

I wonder if you'd feel differently if you knew someone who died because they weren't strapped into a car/carseat properly. I guess consider yourselves lucky most of you don't have that exposure like I do.
Emergency only.

No. I voted no, even though I guess if I had a life-or-death emergency I would hold her in a car while driving to the ER.
I saw a study that gave adults a life-sized/weighted baby doll and had them hold them in a simulated collision at 15 MPH and not one of them could keep a hold on the baby. I wish I had the link. That stuck with me. Many of the participants thought they could- I mean, 15 MPH! But none could.

@lovehoneybee: I probably would have done the same thing, I just read and put myself in the situation you described. Especially if it was close and they drove very slowly.

@blackbird: Sorry to hear about that. It's not anything I would wish on anyone.

I was just thinking about this the other night when D's fever got up to 104.6 and I was having terrified thoughts of him having a febrile seizure. In that situation, and that situation only, would I consider holding him. I just don't think I could strap my seizing child into a car seat.

I took care of a patient whose parent had them on a lap for driving slowly in a parking lot (just for fun). Long story short, the child is paralyzed.

@lawbee11: lol, that group scares me! Some of those posts are like watching reality tv, I just want to grab some popcorn and watch all the drama.
@blackbird: omg, I'm sorry to hear that. I couldn't imagine.
@kjpugs: I'm going to google this and see if I can find it. A family member takes her LO out of the seat to nurse and everything I say gets brushed of as me being "paranoid" it's so frustrating.

Not under any circumstances that I can think of. Just this past weekend I needed to nurse DD2 while we were out shopping. I refused to let DH drive across the parking lot to the restaurant we were going to have lunch at.
@Mrs. Jacks: that is awful and the exact reason I refuse.
If something happened I could never ever forgive myself. I've also nursed DD1 while driving by draping myself over her infant seat

I can't think of any reason that I would, but I won't say no because if a situation arose maybe I would have to consider it. In an emergency I'm calling 911 not driving myself. A few blocks from home, I'd just walk and carry them. Driving in a parking lot is one of the scariest places to drive. So so many accidents occur in parking lots.
I get it, but I'm way too paranoid. It's stressful enough driving around with a baby strapped into a safety device.
