I am really curious about this topic too. We bought one to help us train our dog, the biggest thing we wanted it for is when we hike, he is awesome 95% of the time but his biggest issue is coming the first time when we call him and while sometimes it is just annoying it has the potential to be dangerous while hiking.

Right now we are just trying to get the dog acclimated to the collar and to have him associate it positively. We put it on when we are going places (he LOVES going anywhere-- even the vet) and praise/treat him. I have to say, he doesn't love the thing, it is a bit bulky and the collar is unwieldy. I want to find a different collar to put the device part on but I haven't had much luck at this point.

Our plan is to issue a verbal command, wait a brief moment, issue a warning sound, wait a brief moment and then shock. That might change as we go but from what we have read it looks like a decent place to start. I want to make sure that we don't undermine our verbal commands since he won't have the collar on all of the time.

I totally get your hesitancy about the controversial nature of the training collar, it is such a tricky topic with people having very strong opinions. I felt guilty for weeks (ok, even now) about buying a prong collar. I struggle with the idea that people will think we are mean for having one but my dog is not even remotely fearful of it, we use it very sparingly and truthfully it doesn't hurt, it is more uncomfortable than anything-- and what's more, he gets to go to lots of places because his behavior is usually impeccable and ultimately that makes him a happier dog. Goodness, this can be tricky!

We've still use our e- collar on our doggy. We mostly use and he responds to the beep by coming to us or the door. Our remote comes w a tick shock which is good rather than the continuous shock. He's experienced both though and he responds to both very well.

We have a wireless fence collar as well as a training collar. Both shock her, but both of them also have warning beeps, so for the fence collar if she gets too close to the edge it beeps and she backs up. If she were to keep going it would give her a quick shock. She learned her boundaries really quickly and now she doesnt even need the collar to stay in the yard. We liked it so much we bought the training one because she was digging. It has a remote and if you want her to stop, or do whatever, you beep it. If she doesnt stop you can shock her. DH has been shocked by the yard one and I tried the training collar, it isnt bad at all and there are diffrent levels depending on your dog size.

I strongly recommend both of them. We used the training one to stop digging, leash train and several tricks. I can't remember the last time we had to shock her. After maybe 3 or 4 times she learned what the beep ment and was good to go!
