I have an interesting topic to broach and I'm interested to hear some different opinions.

I recently attended a meeting about my nursing program with school officials and the topic of the background check surfaced. It is required that every nursing student have a background check performed and in order to work clinicals, it's mandatory to have a clean record. The school official informed us that the board of nursing will not allow someone to work with patients who has a record - and even told a story of one student who had a minor infraction from when he was 19 of a DUI and thus has to petition the board of nursing to be allowed to take his nursing licensure and be allowed to work with patients, even though he is in his late 30's now.

So my question is this: do you agree that any health professionals should not be allowed to practice if they have any type of past record? Where do you draw the line?
