I'm almost embarrassed to post this pic- my hands look awful - extremely dry! What would you recommend to help it?
Wondering if I need to slather them in lotion and sleep with gloves on??

I have very dry skin and eczema so I do actually sleep with gloves on and it makes a world of difference
I do Vaseline and layer Cetaphil (the tub) and then gloves

Yes! My husband gets dry cracking hands that bleed and the only thing that helps is "working hands", slathered on and gloves overnight. A thicker cream is a must for daily maintenance.

I use aquaphor when they get that dry, but it makes it hard to do anything else since my hands are so greasy. I will slather them before watching a show at night. Mine are cracked in a bunch of places after washing them 6000 times a day during our stomach bug.

Aveeno Hand Cream (the one for babies). I use it on my infant and hands for myself. It's the only thing that keeps my hands soft.

@Mrs. Pickles: @regberadaisy: What kind of gloves? Just like nitrile exam gloves? DH has horribly dry/cracked hands and we haven't found a lotion that works on its own.

@kiddosc: I personally use cotton "spa" gloves, commonly found at drugstores. But they don't make them big enough to fit his hands. so he uses a pair of cotton tube socks!

I used Vaseline and gloves for nighttime sleeping. This was when I was a child, so I think my mom had me use standard cheapie winter gloves.

@Mamaof2: I also keep a bottle of lotion with a pump dispenser at my desk. I put lotion on after every hand wash!

I use Glysomed and put it on my hands every night before I go to bed. It keeps my hands super soft! It's not the best smelling stuff, and it is really greasy, but that's why I do it before bed.

@regberadaisy: I do too but its not enough I guess!
I will try wearing gloves /socks tonight!

@Mamaof2: what are you using? Maybe you need something more hydrating? I just use a Vaseline intensive care lotion. But got DH a pump dispenser tub of vanicream for work. It's the same stuff I use on the girls for their eczema.

Neutrogena Norweigan foumula hand cream. This stuff is amazing!

Lanolin before bed, Nivea (in the dark blue tub) during the day, and drink at least half your weight in ounces of water daily (so if you weigh 100lbs, drink 50oz water)

@MrsSRS: ah good thought - I could be dehydrated - I know I don't drink enough water!

@kiddosc: I've done all of the above, but whatever I can find usually the cotton ones work the best

I would put Lansinoh on them at night and a heavy cream during the day, or a thinner coat of Lansinoh. That stuff is like a miracle cream for really dry and chaffed skin. My go-to hand cream is l'Occitane, which I find to be super effective.

It could also be your hand soap. I get eczema if I use anything with sodium laurel sulfate, so I switched my bathroom and kitchen soap to SLS-free. Also definitely use lotion after every hand wash.

I'm a big fan of the Helping Hands cream from Lush. I also put on moisturizer every night, whether I feel like my hands are dry or not, to try to keep them relatively ok especially in winter.

What do you think is causing them to get that dry? I have trouble with my dry hands when I use particular soaps/handwashes (palmolive, but also natural type soaps). I use a mild cortisone cream if it gets really bad.

After you wash your hands, make sure you dry them very well. I usually dry with paper towel and then stick them under the hand dryer. It makes a huge difference. After every wash I use Neutrogena Norwegian formula hand cream or Aveeno Eczema lotion. Neosporin Exczema Essentials is great too. All of those work great during the day, then go for something thick and goopy at night.

@regberadaisy: second "working hands." My husband got it for me in my xmas stocking; I put it on at night and it really helps. My hands crack and bleed (and this winter I've been getting the really painful cracks on the tops of my fingers for the first time, yay!) and it's the only lotion that feels like it actually helps even with me only using it once at night (I don't bother with gloves).

I hate the feeling most lotions leave behind, so I tend to use coconut oils after I bathe/wash hands and before bed. Seems to work for me!

I started putting California baby calendula lotion on my hands this winter after I developed eczema for the first time in my life. My favorite lotion, though, (and this will sound weird) is from Trader Joe's-A Midsummer Night's Cream. It's really thick and non-greasy!

I think Aveda's hand cream is pretty good. I'd do the gloves thing. I had hands like that when LO1 got sick and LO2 was a newborn, from washing them so much plus the dry weather. LO1's preschool has this machine where you check them in and out with a fingerprint, and I had to end up getting a special code because it just couldn't recognize me anymore! (ETA, and LO2 got sick anyway...)

My hands are like that - most of my fingers have areas where the skin is split open from dryness and they are so, so painful! I use Garnier Intensive therapy lotion for dry hands during the day and at night I slather my hands in Vaseline. It's gross and I hate the greasy feeling but one or two nights of that and my hands are massively better! Bonus: Vaseline is cheap as anything as well
