help! foscam troubles..

So I received my Foscam today in the mail (yay!) after the blog post about it. I just successfully linked it to wireless (yay!).

Now I'm stuck. I thought I had somewhat figured out the whole port forwarding thing (not really), then like the instruction manual says I went to dyndns.com to set up a "free domain service' - well, turns out it's not free anymore. what the heck! it says 20/year, or a free trial.

am I doing something wrong? should I call Foscam next week? Anyone with this camera want to help?

Dang! I am glad to read this! I was just about to take my monitor off my registry and get the Foscam too! I hope someone answers your question! 20/year isn't too bad...I guess since it's cheaper to begin with anyway than the monitor I was going to get.

@lydg: at the very least, if I can figure out audio it'll be worth it! for $99, I don't really *need* to see it from outside the house..I can use my computer if I'm in the house. extremely annoying because I'd like to use my phone, but..c'est la vie, I suppose. hopefully someone can help, haha.

We have a foscam as our puppy-cam, so I asked DH what you should do. He said he didn't see the free option at dyndns (which we used to use) any more, but that you would need to pay for some sort of web address. You can do it through dydns or any other web hosting service. He has ours with Go Daddy for $3/year, but there would be technical setup on your computer that isn't necessary with dyndns.

@MrsCB: interesting! I'll look into it this weekend - do you have any advice for audio, even just on the computer? it says I need a plug-in, but even when I have downloaded it, it still says it's not there

@sorrycharlie: I personally haven't tried this (since we just need video for the dog), but I did a quick google search and found this thread - http://foscam.us/forum/new-firmware-plug-in-for-firefox-google-chrome-t782.html.

Sounds like the easiest way to get it working is using Firefox on Windows, but that Firefox on Mac is possible too. And in reading the thread it says to make sure all browser windows are closed when you install the plugin, and then reboot.

I asked my husband (we can watch via our phones). He said our ISP provides a free IP address as part of the package, which is what we use (does this address the issue you're having, I am not sure?). He also said there are other free alternatives if you don't have this service from your ISP.

@looch: yes, part of my issue is that the computer is the free way to watch and I can't figure out the plug in (lol) and the pay-way to watch her on my phone is where I have to pay for a domain name and set up port forwarding, which I cannot figure out for the life of me I don't think our ISP (verizon fios) provides a free website or anything like that?

@MrsCB: thank you! I tried to do everything they said, but it still doesn't recognize it I think I might try to call foscam soon to figure it out!

okay, so! for anyone following this crazyness..I figured out that by typing the IP address into the browser on my phone, I can log into the camera. problem solved. now..the issue.

no audio on my computer, OR the phone. I know I can call Foscam about that, but any tips?

Also - does anyone use a certain app for this? or just the website?

Awww what a pain in the butt! I have no advice, but this thread has convinced me that when the time comes, I should stick with a regular video moniter! You are very patient!

@mrs. bird: I am no longer patient - I am enraged. haha. this is going back. I have been trying to call their customer service and no one is answering, I've googled to the point of extremes to find out what the hell is going on with the audio and all I've managed to find is that someone who works for the VLC plug-in dept "quit" and they don't have anyone to update plug-ins. which means, essentially (I'm assuming) no audio. I was really excited to only spend $100 on this but it's SO not worth the hassle. I kind of need to hear her! ><

@sorrycharlie: DH asked me a few days ago if I wanted to return ours (in my enthusiasm I got the 2-pack!). I said no at the time, but we weren't able to get ours set up either. After receiving a lovely email today asking me to review this on Amazon, I might be tempted to send ours back too. I thought I could use it to keep track of the dog while we're out because she manages to lock herself in our bedroom and get frantic, but this isn't working.

@sorrycharlie: I'm so sorry you're having so much trouble...

audio has been our issue too - but setting it up on our PC and my iPod has been no issue. I know you can get audio if you buy the foscam camera app, but I just got the free CamViewer app that doesn't allow audio.
We supplement audio with a graco vibe audio monitor. I know it seems silly to essentially have two monitors, but I don't need to see him at ALL times, I just check in - and I never have the app open at all times (it would drain the battery too). So I mostly rely on the audio monitor.

We couldn't figure it out either... sorry!!! But we're sticking with it, we got a visual and that's all we really needed.

@spaniellove: do you use your phone? thanks to @Coco Bee I HAVE SOUND ON MY PHONE!!!! ohhh happy day. HAHA. I downloaded the "CamViewer" app on my phone and once I verified it's working, added sound capability for 2.99 from the app store. It totally works!! I think I'll keep it now..and try to figure out the sound on the computer as we go..

@spaniellove: it's delayed by a couple of seconds, but when it comes down to spending another $50 on an audio monitor or $70 more to get a motorola, I'll take the second delay. lol. I'm going to be in the house (or right outside it) anyway..so I'm sure I'll hear her scream through the house before I would through the monitor!

This is Mr. Peacockblue. We setup our Foscam FI8910W Wireless N IP Camera this afternoon, and promtly encountered the audio issues that several of you have posted about already. Through a little bit of digging I got everything setup to work as advertised. Please note that this was done on the latest version of the Firefox browser, and the steps seem quite similar for Safari users (see VLC wiki on Plugins for more). I generally avoid IE, so I can't help much if that's your browser of choice.

Anyway, as many of you already know, you need to start by going to http://www.videolan.org to download the VLC media player. Save the file to a location you can easily access, close all Firefox browsers, then go run the file. During the setup, you'll have a chance to choose the components you want to install...make sure that the box next to the Mozilla Plugin is checked. With that critical selection made, complete the install normally. When you launch Firefox again, the VLC Web Plugin 2.0.2.0 should be in your list of Add-Ons. Check the Add-On Manager in Firefox to ensure that this plugin is enabled, and, once confirmed, try opening the IP Camera Web UI. If you're still having trouble, check the wiki to see if anything stands out. Also, make sure you're running the latest version of the browser (version 14.0.1 as fo this post...though anything later than 12 should be fine).

@spaniellove: I decided to return it...I'm so bummed. I don't want to have to rely on my phone (I found a $6 app that has zoom feature, which was awesome, but the audio was really lagging). I'm bummed about losing the $10 ish on apps I spent trying to get it to work..but, c'est la vie, I guess I'm going to get the motorola 2.5 inch I believe..with a coupon at buy buy baby should be about $50 more. for all the hassle, I'm just giving up on the foscam..quite sad. if I had windows I'd keep it!
