Something large (9x12 ish) and neutral and good for high traffic areas. And something that is not scratchy on the feet, doesn't leave fluff everywhere, and easy to clean baby messes off of!

Contemporary and I'm not super worried about the budget right now.....for the right rug I'm willing to spend some $$$!

I looked high and low and finally ended up at a carpet store customizing the size for a carpet area rug. They cut and bind the edges for you. LOVE it. And had no idea you can actually counter offer their price. I really wanted a wool rug but with a dog and two boys... forget it. Maybe when they are grown or something.

@erwoo: oh good idea! can I ask what kind of carpet you got? Low pile, high pile...what is best?

@Ginabean3: Of course! I got a 9x10 high pile nylon shag for $1k exactly (I know you didn't ask but thought it would be helpful), but it's a tighter weave so it stays straight up and soooo soft to walk on. I didn't even upgrade the padding. Just the standard padding. I walked on quite a few before loving this one. It's basically a high end carpet that I made into an area rug. I actually got the idea from model homes.
As for high or low, picking a high pile was a personal thing b/c I love to sit on the floor with my kids and a low pile would hurt my old bones, especially lying on it. LOL! Plus, if any of my boys fell off the couch (it happens more often that I'd like to admit! They are crazy!) it doesn't hurt or hurt as much. I still would love to get a really nice wool/silk rug one of these days but not until my kids are more grown and won't be spilling things on the rug.

@erwoo: is it easy to clean? Can you use a regular vacuum on it? Does it shed at all? Sorry for the millions of questions...you are very helpful! Also thanks for including the price!

@Ginabean3: As with any new carpet/area rug it will shed after you get it. I don't remember ours shedding for that long or a lot either. Vacuuming frequently when you get it might help? I don't remember what we did. And, yes, you can use a regular vacuum and a carpet steam cleaner to clean it if you want later. It's nylon carpet so you can do whatever you want to it as you would as installed wall-to-wall carpet unless it's wool carpet. Then that's different. No worries about the millions of questions. Happy to help!

Ooh that is a good idea! That's what my parents had in our old house... totally forgot about that.

Havr you checked out C+B? I have been super pleased with our new area rug. It's neutral in the gray family, but has some yellow in it. We already had yellow as an accent so the rug was perfect. West Elm also has some great area rugs.
