Where do I start.
I need to talk bee's, I need some advice.
I got pregnant with baby phoenix February 2013. At the exact same time in my life I was diagnosed with Graves Disease. It was a close call. I wasn't doing good at all. They got me into the Endocrinologist the next day. I started PTU 100 mg 3X a day. After baby phoenix was born the doc decided to slowly wean me off PTU 100 mg at a time. A few months later I was down to one 100 mg a day. He wanted to see if the Grave was going to go dormant. All the symptoms came back with a vengeance. I'm now back up to 3X a day. Now the Doc wants me to make a decision. Surgery to remove my thyroid, or Iodine radiation.
Here's the thing with iodine radiation. I can't be near baby phoenix 5 days in hospital. then I can't be no more than 6 feet to her for a while afterwards. I cannot breastfeed her anymore. I have to make sure my milk dries up 6 weeks before the radiation. I went through a lot of struggles to breastfeed this little girl. She had a posterior tongue tie and a lip tie surgery. I had low milk supply because of it. Had to go on Domperidone, blessed thistle and fenugreek. 9 pills of EACH 3X daily. Now after all that things are going amazing with breastfeeding. Yet I would have to quit. There's a high chance that because of the radiation I could end up with bulging eyes and eye problems. I cannot get pregnant until a year after the treatment. Even when a year is done, there's a higher risk of miscarriage in subsequent pregnancy's. Radiation can pool in the salivary glands, ovaries, and stomach lining. I'm currently 32 and we want more babies. Possibly a chance that one treatment won't be enough and will have to do more. (ie more time away from baby girl)Huge possibility that I'll become Hypothyroid afterwords and will need Synthroid the rest of my life.
Second option is Surgery to remove my thyroid, once it's gone it's gone. I will be on Synthroid the rest of my life. I won't have to stop breastfeeding. I don't have to stay away from my baby. I will have to have my levels messed with all the time to find the right happy medium.
What Do I Do?
A huge part of me is saying just do the surgery, but I'm scared of not having a thyroid. I've struggled with my weight my whole life. I'm just tiered of it, but I know without a thyroid I can say good by to ever loosing this extra weight.
I also have to mention that my dad had thyroid cancer. This also scared me.
I'm so stressed bee's
It sounds like the radiation has too many "what ifs" associated with it. I have a friend who had her thyroid removed in her late teens due to thyroid cancer and she has been perfectly fine after having it removed. Synthyroid is a easy medication to be on (I'm on it for Hashimoto's), so I think that would be easier than dealing with the unknowns of radiation.
