My MIL wants to buy me a saree for mothers day. I have a ton already for a variety of occasions, so this one is just for fun (no specific event in mind). Which should I choose? The saree draping / blouse design would be my choice, just judge based on the material

Pink/green or pink/gold. I don't get to wear my Indian clothing very often, so for myself I prefer (what I consider) more traditional looking saris & salwars. They're all pretty though!

I love the first one the best, but all are pretty! I'm too chicken to wear one. I wore lehengas for our Indian wedding.

ps - sarees don't look like they did when I was a kid (and I saw my friends' parents wearing sarees). They were not figure hugging like these ones - they were much fuller with lots of fabric and they were always worn with these little cropped tops. I always loved them (so colourful and glitterry!) but these slinky ones are really, really beautiful!!!

@Cherrybee: pretty sure that saris have been the same, its just how you tie it! my MIL actually ties sarees very modestly (with the skirt well above your belly button) and with my hourglass figure I just looked puffy and awful. I spent some time on youtube and now am pretty good at tying it on myself..
ETA: as an example, here's a best seller from the same website.. pretty similar to your 80s one!

@Cherrybee: it's regional, too! South indian sarees typically use much thicker fabrics--fancy ones are kanjeepuram silk which is heavy stuff and not all that figure flattering. North indian sarees are more influenced by bollywood trends, so you get more of those net sarees (the very see-through type) and more bling and more trendy blouse styles (the cropped top you are talking about).
My wedding saree was a kanjeepuram silk saree and they were very modest. Nothing showed! It's just a different regional style. Here's another picture of their back---very modest.
Younger girls tend to wrap their saree lower (a few inches below the belly button) and have shorter, trendier blouses with interesting necklines and open backs. Older ladies have longer sleeves, higher necklines, and a longer top in general.
