My FIL is a very kind, quiet man who I really like and respect, but I just don't know him very well. He's a very young 75, is an avid hiker (like he can do 30 miles in a day), retired satellite engineer, very intelligent and well read. They live in a small town in Lake Tahoe, so I can't do any gift cards because there are no stores in their town. I'd like to do something more personal but just don't know what. Any suggestions? What are you getting for the men in your families?

An experience is always a good idea for my Dad. There is a local flight museum that does rides in classic airplanes and we paid for one for my dad last Christmas. Or we are thinking about a sailing excursion for his birthday this summer.
A book on a subject he likes. My dad isn't much of a fiction reader, but he likes books that talk about subjects he likes, F1 racing, or how something was built.

I got my dad the new Craftsman tool...some kind of universal wrench. I got one for my brother, too.
But, his birthday is in the summer, so I usually take him to a rodeo or something.

A personal thing we got my FIL is a Grateful Dead lullaby CD. He is a huge Grateful Dead fan and I'm pretty sure has every CD they've ever made (or made by reunion bands). Since I'm pregnant this year, we thought it would be fun to give him this CD! He's a big tech guy, so we also got an Apple TV for him and MIL.
Maybe go to a hiking store and ask for some suggestions since he seems to enjoy that? Maybe they can find some cool gadgets that he might not ever buy for himself, but would be nice to have.

I'd make him a gift pack of trail food, water bottle, bandanas, etc for his hike. Or an emergency hiking beacon if he doesn't have one. Or maybe a gift certificate for a sports massage or something?

What about a book? I'm getting this one for my husband, because it is part adventure, but still non-fiction. I heard about it on NPR, and it sounds fascinating.
In general, though, I agree-it's hard to buy for the men in my family!

Does he drink beer? We got, my FIL a set of Sam Adams pint glasses (the fancy shaped, etched ones through Boston Beer).

Does he have lots of electronic gadgets that need charging? My single sister got my husband and our other sister's husband one of these nifty little portable charging stations, and they both think she's the best SIL ever.
