You can also try bicycling his legs after eating and pushing his knees to his chest. That helped my daughter.

Or LO had issues pooping from about 1 or 2 weeks old. We had to switch formula due to diarreah and then it was constipation issues. So we have tried 5 formulas and finally found one that worked for her. She would try to go but would have difficulty getting it out so she went every 3 days or so. I did massage and bicycle legs, not sure if they helped or not. What worked most of the time was when she would try to go I would lay her on the changing table, take her diaper off and bend her knees up into her chest. We didnt have to use the qtip trick, we could stimulate her by wiping her butt or blowing on it. Same thing with your LO she knows how to go but just didnt remember exactly where to push. I would also try this at each diaper change if she had not gone yet. I felt like we would never just "find" a poopy diaper. We were always activly helping her go. I think it got better around 1.5 or 2 months. Our LO did end up having reflux and gas also. So we did gas drops with each bottle and she was put on zantac. Her reflux didnt have too much spit up but a lot of screaming after eating and coughing.

How often have you been switching formula types? That by itself can cause constipation and gas issues. You really need to stick with one for several weeks in order to see whether or not it works for your LO (ignore if you already know this!).

If gas is an issue, have you tried giving gas drops before every feeding? With our LO, who had tons of gas issues, we needed to use Gentle Ease formula, probiotics, gas drops and colic water in every bottle. I don't know if the colic water really helped, but it seemed to help. Gas drops before (and sometimes after) every bottle helped as well. Holding her upright for feeding helped, too.

Back to your original question - TMI TMI TMI I have had to help LO poop, and sometimes have to still help her. For LO, the easiest way to get her to poop when she is backed up and struggling is to put her in the tub (water hotter than usual), and to massage her lower back and right around her butt. If I press (gently, of course) sort of right around the butt hole (sometimes you can feel the poop, and if so, press a little against it), that will help her to pass the poop. Not sure if this is your LO's problem too, but thought I'd share in case it helps!

@MrsMaine: My son never vomited and he was MSPI for absolutely certain. At 2 he still can't tolerate Soy but he can have milk. The major issues was NOT pooping and screaming in pain constantly.
