My dh is currently looking for jobs outside of the state we live in, which is obviously a negative to prospective hiring employers. Any tips on what to say to why we want to move to the area? honestly, we just want to move to this area because its nice. lol. not really something to say to a hiring manager lol.

I would just make it clear that you are looking to move to the area and keep it at that. When we are hiring, we often get out of town applications and sometimes it is clear they are looking to move and sometimes they are looking for remote opportunities and sometimes we have no idea and it is awkward to have to ask. So I'd just state it in the cover letter so they know. (FWIW, we are usually not looking for people to work remotely, so knowing someone wants to relocate to our area is a plus).

I don't think saying you are wanting to move to the area because it is nice is a bad thing. As an employer I'd like an employee who was excited to move to a place and wanted to plant roots there. Employers like to retain staff; liking where you live is a part of that!!

Only thing I'd add to the above is to say in his cover letter if what dates (if there are any) that he'll be in their area - depending on his field, it could get him an interview if they like his resume but don't necessarily want to pay for flights/lodging.

I've done it twice. I've just conclusively stated in my cover letter than I will be moving to the area, and give them a general timeframe - I was able to tell them the month I was moving there due to my circumstances. As long as it's clear you are moving and will be there at a specified time, I wouldn't look at it negatively as an interviewer. If it's wishy washy in the cover letter though, I would probably wouldn't consider them as closely.

We actually both lied on job applications by saying we lived there already. It was easy because we used my parents address. I think it's such a tough job market that many candidates are passed over for reasons like living out of state before even being given a chance!

I would make it clear on the cover letter that he isn't asking for a remote / telecommute position. We recently hired a new candidate for my small team at work and interviewed multiple out-of-town candidates (it's a specialized position, so not surprising) but some people were not clear at all on their intent until well into the interview process, which irritated the hiring manager.

He put on his resume and cover letter that he plans to move to this area June 2016. Buttt we are only moving there if he lands the job as he has a job here.
He has a job interview tomorrow and we know they are going to ask about it. I was thinking of him just telling them we like the area and have family in the area (we have cousins there!) Make it sound like we are 100% serious about it, which we are ID he gets the job -
@stargal: I think your plan sounds fine (him saying that you like the area and have family there, so he's 100% committed to moving if he gets the position). It's great that you already gave them a date for moving. Sounds like you have covered all your bases.

@stargal: Yes, another vote for mentioning family ties to the area. This worked for me and my family connections were even more remote than yours. No one has to know that, just makes the arrangement sound more believable. Ultimately, if he's a overwhelmingly competitive candidate, they will invite him for an interview and further test his seriousness of moving. So no need to go over the top just for the resume stage, imo.
