If you planned on a home birth and ended up having to transfer, could you explain how that goes? Why did you have to to transfer? I always pictured it as an ambulance type thing, but I think I've read people on here who just drove there in their car.
Like a lot of things with home birth, I haven't really researched it at all and I think I have a Hollywood image rather than realistic. Of course, this is totally personal so I get why people wouldn't want to respond with many details!

My friend is a home birth midwife and when they transfer they go in a car. It's sometimes the mom's choice, but usually the reasons are some kind of fetal distress or failure to progress.
Edited to add: I guess if it was an extreme emergency they would call 911. They have also transferred after the birth due to concerns about babe.

Have you read my birthstory? Definitely do if you haven't (I'm of course a bit partial to it).. also I was a planned hbac that transferred at 9+cm.
We had be projecting a possible transfer for a couple hours & played it by ear. In the end I think had I been able to get re-focused we could've stayed home. As for the transfer... Our MW called ahead to the hospital to let them know we were otw, called the obgyn that she got connected with incase of transfer (she had agreed to meet us there), gave DH the info he would need to give the admin & nurses, and we drove ourselves.
It felt about the same as when I headed to the hospital when in labor with my first... of course minus b/c in transition b/c I went much earlier the first time. lol

@runsyellowlites: I think I had read it ages ago, but just went back and found it-- thanks! It's like the Hollywood version of birth in general-- water breaks in a hilarious way, rush to the hospital, push push push, baby! It totally makes sense that you would know for a while that a transfer was likely and have time to prepare.

Well I was in a freestanding birth center instead of home, but when I transferred to the hospital it was by ambulance. If we had transferred for a less urgent reason we would have gone by car.
Keep in mind that for extreme emergencies that must be dealt with quickly, a midwife will typically bring equipment to deal with those in the home. All midwives I know carry oxygen, drugs to stop bleeding, etc.

I transferred the first time at my request for pain management (turns out I was having kidney stones, and contractions). We went in our car and the midwife called ahead and we followed her there.
The second time, was because my midwife didn't have a second attendant and won't attend home births without one. I was so bummed. I rocked that labour though - could have totally done it at home.
I don't think it's very common to transfer by ambulance ... midwifes will usually risk you out, or make the transfer before things get so out of hand that an ambulance is required.

We transferred in our car. DH drove me and my midwife met us at the hospital.
