Do you or do your plan to? I am planning to homeschool my kids. The more I learn about the education system in my state the more scared I become. Children are not learning the way that they should in school and it is sad. And not by the fault of the teachers, the modules and common core stuff is just a sad version of education. I hope that my children will enjoy learning, not be forced to learn based on some rigid module.

I go back and forth on this...on one hand, I am a product of the public school system and I think I turned out okay. But the main issue I have with schools today isn't the cirriculum, it is the safety aspect.

I haven't been through the rigorous training and certification process that teachers have; not just learning 'subjects' but how to teach students with different styles of learning and growth. I might be very well educated, but do not consider myself qualified to replace the school system. So no.
ETA: That said, DH and I prioritize living in a district with a good school system above pretty much anything else.

Public schools in my area are the best in the country, so I don't worry about LO not getting a good education. DH and I do fluctuate between sending LO to private school v. public school.

I feel that I received a wonderful education, but I think that the way that I was taught is a disappearing technique. My husband also attended public school and he has dyslexia. Despite attending one of the best public school districts is our state, he feels that if we have children with a similar learning disorder, that they would actually do better with the one on one attention available with homeschooling as opposed to at trained professional that is helping multiple children at once. Obviously that is just an opinion and not a fact but for us it is a strong positive.

@Beyond2: What about getting a tutor? I think a lot of public schools have them available for extremely cheap, especially if it's to help with something like dyslexia.

I am a teacher. I started teaching in NY and moved to TX. As an educator, I'm not a big fan of TX's curriculum or state assessments, and it makes me really worried about my children being properly prepared for college. That being said, I don't think I would homeschool, because I feel like so much more goes into attending school. I don't want them to miss out on the social aspects of it (ie homecoming, ability to participate in band/theater/art etc). TX's curriculum and state assessments seem to change frequently, which is strange because in NY it didn't change the whole 5 years I taught there, and I'm hoping TX continues to make strides in the right direction. But, if it isn't where I want it to be when my children are attending school, I will look at ways to supplement, such as tutoring or making sure they are only in AP classes.
In terms of early education, as long as my children start school for a love of learning and have a solid base for reading and numbers, I'm ok with what the schools do here (and if they don't I'll personally supplement for my children).
